To suggest Chelsea aren’t pleased with their striker situation will be quite the understatement, which makes it quite expected to see them looking for immediate improvements in that area, mostly focusing on Gonzalo Higuain of Napoli, even though he has been with the Italian club for about four months.
According to the Sun, not the most reputable of sources, Chelsea are willing to pay close to £45 million while he cost Napoli £32.5 million to sign. Not making it to the next round of the Champions League and currently straggling behind Roma and Juventus in the Serie A has been a disappointment and somewhat of a financial hit on Napoli, possibly willing to improve the situation in their bank account by selling their best striker.
Higuain has scored nine league goals since arriving in Napoli, adding four more in the Champions League, along with six assists in all competition. He’s been quite a hit with the fans, which was expected considering his scoring record for Real Madrid over the last five seasons.
Jose Mourinho wasn’t the biggest fan of Higuain’s at Madrid. He always claimed that the perfect striker is a blend of Karim Benzema and Higuain, and never really found it in his heart to be fully content with the two of them. However, considering that the Torres-Eto’o-Ba coalition have only five league goals between them, he’s willing to “settle” for someone who is “just” very good and not the perfect striker.
What do Arsenal have to say about the matter? The gunners were quite interested in the Argentine striker during the summer, but their dealings with Real Madrid fell through. It’s hard to believe Arsenal will spend such a huge fee for a second time in five months, but no one expected them to sign Mesut Ozil either. There is a problem with their lack of depth at striker, and possibly making a move for Higuain will be proof of just how serious they are about winning a championship.
