The trend in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals was Mexican teams crushing their MLS rivals. Cruz Azul vs Kansas City was no different, ending in a 5-2 aggregate victory for the Mexican side, including a 5-1 win in the second leg, with a beautiful finishing goal from Christian Gimenez, which was probably the best team play we’ve seen from anyone this season.

Yes, there was some very poor defending from the broken down side, visiting Estadio Azul. It was already 4-1 at that stage in favor of La Máquina, easily overcoming their 1-0 loss in the first leg.

Hugo Mariano Pavone scored twice through the first 23 minutes, but a late first half goal by Benny Feilhaber for the visitors made for an interesting second half, supposedly. Pavone completed his hat trick in the 55th minute to give Cruz Azul the edge once more, before the goals from Mauro Formica and Gimenez finished the job, sending Kansas City back home in humiliating fashion.

Cruz Azul, the #2 seed in the quarterfinals will now play against Tijuana in the semifinals, while another Mexican team, Toluca, are waiting for the winner between Alajuelense of Costa Rica and Árabe Unido of Panama.
