The Turkish Premier League, or Turkcell Super Lig is in the midst of it’s final stretch of the season. With Sivasspor and Besiktas leading the league it seemed that local pride had much more importance in this year’s Big Istanbul Derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce who both seemed to be a bit out of reach of finishing 1st this season.
The game, one of the biggest rivalries in the soccer world didn’t live up to the high level of expectations, at least from a pure soccer view point. For those who like things tense and even violent, they got what they wished for.
Fenerbahce player had something for Emre of Galatasaray throughout the whole match and things eventually erupted in the 90th minute. After Roberto Carlos missed a free kick, a brawl erupted on the pitch with started with Diego Lugano and Emre Asik kicking things off. It resulted with all 22 players getting in on things, benches clearing to participate and also went on to continue in the stands and outside the stadium.
4 players were sent off eventually – Diego Lugano and Semih Senturk from Fenerbahce, Emre Asik and Arda Turan from Galatasaray.
7 games before the end of the season, these two giants of Turkish football will probably finish this season without a place in the Champions League for next season, and this brawl will be another reason for both clubs to put this disappointing season behind them.
For those of you who like to see players hot and bothered here’s your chance.
