Despite not having the best of seasons, Dwight Howard is still the biggest name hitting free agency in 2013, and it seems he has already narrowed down his options to a couple of teams. It’s either staying with the Los Angeles Lakers, or leaving to the Houston Rockets, with the Dallas Mavericks presumably off the table for him.

The emergence of Jimmy Butler during his second season, usually at the expense of an injured Luol Deng, has the Chicago Bulls thinking that it might be time to finally pull the trigger on a trade they’ve been considering for a very long time. With Butler on the rise and Deng becoming more and more of a health risk, there’s a chance that before his contract runs out in 2014, the two-time All-Star will find himself on another team.

NBA teams aren’t allowed to have any contact with free agents until July 1, but the photos of Dirk Nowitzki, Mark Cuban and Chris Paul at Tiger Woods’ “Poker Night” tournament give everyone a pretty strong feeling that the best point guard in the NBA might be heading to play for the Dallas Mavericks next season after the disappointing finish with the Los Angeles Clippers in this year’s playoffs.

Instead of being a simple case of re-signing him to a max contract, Howard is about to test the waters, as some love to say, in free agency, being extremely interested in the developing situations in Texas for either the Houston Rockets or the Dallas Mavericks.

Los Angeles Lakers – What’s Next?
No matter what kind of mutterings you’ll hear, the Los Angeles Lakers failed in the 2012-2013 NBA season, barely making it into the playoffs and getting swept in the first round. Kobe Bryant will be back eventually, hopefully not too far from his ability from before the injury. The biggest decisions for the Lakers remain with re-signing Dwight Howard, keeping (or not) Mike D’Antoni while making up their minds about the future of Pau Gasol, Metta World Peace and Steve Nash.
