People are judged in life according to their worst actions. Usually, after they pass away, they’re remembered for their best, unless their worst is something worth a few years in jail. For whatever good Joe Paterno did in his life and especially his work with Penn State, it’ll be forever tainted by knowing and saying nothing about the heinous crimes committed by Jerry Sandusky against children.

Joe Paterno passed away this Sunday after a two month battle with lung cancer at the age of 85. Paterno won more games the highest level of College Football than any other coach in history, but his seemingly never ending tenure with Penn State was over in Mid-November after the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal.

Joe Paterno announced he will step down as head coach of the Nittany Lions when the season ends, but he may be forced to leave sooner than that. His legacy and achievements, despite the dire look of things now, will be remembered. His inaction, we hope didn’t define him. His winning, teaching and longevity, we hope, did.
