College Football – 2014 Week 1 Rankings
There’s no real change in the top of the rankings after the week 1 games, as Florida State and Alabama occupy the top two despite unimpressive wins. Georgia (after beating Clemson) and Texas A&M (defeating South Carolina) are the high risers, scorching their way into the top 10, while Louisville beating Miami made them the only new team in the rankings, coming in instead of an unimpressive Washington team.

Louisville Over Miami – The ACC Isn’t so Bad
A new (not exactly) head coach in Bobby Petrino and a new conference, the ACC, didn’t stop Louisville from having the right kind of start to their season, beating Miami 31-13 in a dominant performance from their new quarterback, Will Gardner, who got plenty of help from Dominique Brown when it came to running the ball.

Baylor Over SMU – How to Debut in a New Stadium
A 45-0 shutout to open up new McClane Stadium is pretty much the best way Baylor could have asked for as they start the 2014 season ranked #10 in the nation, beating SMU behind a strong performance from Bryce Petty and a defense that did an excellent job of keeping the Mustangs from achieving any kind of success.

LSU Over Wisconsin – Nothing Changes in Nonconference SEC Dominance
In Anthony Jennings, LSU at least have someone competent at the quarterback position, which helped them overcome a 17-point deficit to come away with a 28-24 win over Wisconsin, who might have the best running game in the nation thanks to Melvin Gordon and the offensive line, but also have to deal with the deficiencies of Tanner McEvoy.

Georgia Over Clemson – One Monster Player is All it Takes
A very different tone in the importance of the Georgia – Clemson game compared to last season, when national title implications seemed to be on the line. In 2014, it’s a bit mulled down, but it didn’t stop the game from being a huge showcase of supreme talent, as Todd Gurley became a one-man wrecking crew with his running, leading the Bulldogs to a 45-21 win.

Florida State Over Oklahoma State – A Worrying Way to Start the Season
A number one ranked team and defending national champions that haven’t lost a game in almost two years, but Florida State found it quite difficult to beat Oklahoma State 37-31 in the Cowboys Classic, struggling to contain J.W. Walsh for most of the night, and getting a slightly worrying performance from Jameis Winston.

The 2014 College Football season opening week did give us some wild finishes and almost-upsets, but the top two ranked teams in the nation, Florida State (playing Oklahoma State) and Alabama (facing West Virginia) managed to pull through in games that turned out to be a lot more difficult than expected.
