Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are hands down the best players in the world these last few years, joined by Mario Gotze and Franck Ribery from the Bundesliga, Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria from Real Madrid, Antonio Valencia and Wayne Rooney from Manchester United and David Silva as the best supporting strikers in the world heading into 2012.

Another FIFA Ballon d’Or for Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi added another award to his incredibly packed trophy cabinet, winning his third consecutive Ballon d’Or, further cementing his place, at least in the books as the record will show, as the greatest player in the world and this era. Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, while Neymar picked up the Puskas award for 2011 goal of the year.

Even Messi Cries After Losing to Real
Lionel Messi has gotten us used to see him triumphant, victorious and smiling. We’re not used to seeing him and Barcelona losing, and he rarely shows much emotion after defeats. A rare photograph of the Barcelona dressing room after losing to Real Madrid in the Spanish Cup final shows us Messi is human, and cries after losses.

Too Much Messi and Xavi for Neymar and Co. (Barcelona vs Santos)
Lionel Messi scored twice in another sublime performance, alongside a perfect play making performance from Xavi. Neymar was helpless as his Santos team were clearly way in over their heads, losing 4-0 to Barcelona in the FIFA Club World Cup Final, leaving Pele as the only one believing Neymar to be the best in the world.

No Goals Lionel Messi Masterclass (Real Madrid vs Barcelona)
Lionel Messi didn’t score, but provided an assist and another wonderful night of Clasico football as Barcelona came back from a stunningly early Real Madrid lead to beat their biggest rivals 3-1 at the Bernabeu, temporarily returning to the top of the league. Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t find the net as well in another nightmarish Clasico for him.
