Having the best striker in the Premier League isn’t enough. Even someone like Robin van Persie needs a decent enough supply of passes in order to conjure something. Unfortunately for him, David Moyes has done nothing during this summer to improve on that aspect, while the selections he makes (leaving out Shinji Kagawa and Wilfried Zaha) seem to be hurting Manchester United more than actually helping the team.

Getting his first start of the season for Manchester United, Wayne Rooney did show how valuable he is to the team thanks to his ability to play several roles during the 90 minutes (although it wasn’t enough for a satisfying result). Too bad his manager wasn’t brave enough to make some attacking changes to actually make a difference.

For anyone who was “worried” about Manchester United not living up to former standards due to the arrival of David Moyes, they probably forgot about Robin van Persie. Arsene Wenger had the opening match everyone expected Arsenal to have, while Simon Mignolet saved Liverpool from another first-match tragedy, showing how big of a difference the Reds made when they decided to change goalkeepers.

Maybe, just maybe, this isn’t going to be the season Manchester United collapse into oblivion. Maybe David Moyes is going to be a success, and maybe Wayne Rooney will find his place on this team eventually. With Robin van Persie remaining as clinical as he’s been over the last three years, there’s no reason their eternal success shouldn’t endure the managerial change.

The last two seasons, with a total of 56 goals and probably being the best player on a title-winning Manchester United side, probably prove that he is. Is it enough for another league title and finishing with a better taste than last year in the Champions League?
