The Russia 2018 World Cup will be the 6th tournament in the 32-team era, while FIFA are planning on expanding the tournament in 2026. Meanwhile, a year before Russia host the tournament, we rank the performances of the world’s football nations since 1998 based on their finish. Unlike our pre-2010 World Cup rankings, we didn’t hand out points for making the group stage.

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil isn’t that far away – only five months to go, so it’s a good time to start checking out who is who and what is what, including the early favorites to win the competition. Three teams seem to be somewhat ahead of the rest: Brazil, the hosts and confederation cup winners; Spain, the defending World and European champions; and Germany, with probably the most talented squad heading into the tournament.

FIFA Plan to Change World Cup Ranking System & Screw Belgium & Colombia
FIFA isn’t an organization that likes change, in pretty much anything. So in order to avoid a situation in which “unattractive” names like Belgium or Colombia are the first seed in the 2014 World Cup group draw, they’re about to once again tinker with the system and enable nations with a better chance of selling tickets to have a number one spot reserved for them.
