Selection Sunday slightly puts the conference tournaments out of the spotlight, but tournament champions were declared in the ACC, where Virginia beat Duke; the SEC, in which Florida overcame Kentucky; an the Big Ten, with Michigan State beating Michigan.

Something weird happened this season for both teams. Michigan looked bad during the non-conference part of the season, but finished with the Big Ten title for the second time in three years, including beating Michigan State twice. The Spartans looked like the best team in the nation during the first half of the season, but lost seven times in the final 12 games of the regular season.

Without too many opportunities to prove they’re worthy of a very high seeding in the NCAA tournament, Michigan needed Trey Burke at his best to get back for a humiliating loss at Michigan State not too long ago, and pretty much ensure their state rivals won’t be able to win the Big Ten regular seasons title.
