Few managerial rivalries are filled with hate, ego and arrogance such as the one between Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho. Manchester City beating Manchester United in the derby brought out meme makers to make fun of the losing manager, and his most expensive signing, Paul Pogba.
It was certainly the weakest performance from Pogba since returning to Old Trafford for a record transfer fee, although most of the players around him were quite awful as well, especially in the first half. Mourinho has a terrible record when his teams play Guardiola’s, and his helplessness tactically early on just helped fuel the fire. Mourinho complaining about the officials, penalties and red cards was just him being unable to say anything that criticizes his own decisions.
We’re still in September, so this win, in the long run, might not mean anything. But in a fan-culture that’s driven by mockery and memes, these matches are more than just rivals, teams, players or managers going at each other’s throats. It’s an opportunity to run some old jokes into the ground, or simply remake them to fit the current personnel. In this case, until they win a big match, Mourinho and especially Pogba will be the popular figures to be mocked in the Premier League.
