One of the best wide receivers in the upcoming NFL draft is DeVante Parker coming out of Louisville. A potential top 10 pick, Parker is being courted by quite a few teams, with the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings especially interested.
Many are comparing Parker, 22 who is 6’3 and 212 pounds, to Odell Beckham Jr. who had an incredible rookie season for the New York Giants, possibly the only good thing to come out of their miserable 2014 campaign. Parker spent four seasons with the Cardinals, catching 156 passes for 2775 yards and 33 touchdowns.
His Louisville connection is what might bring him to the Vikings, who have the 11th overall pick. They’ve sent scouts to watch him play a number of times over the last couple of seasons, and the Vikings’ starting quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, played with Parker in college. Parker’s best seasons came with Bridgewater throwing to him in 2012 and 2013, combining for 22 touchdown receptions.
The Rams might make the pick unavailable. They’re in need of a wide receiver and a big one at that. With the 10th overall pick, despite the Vikings being very interested, the Rams have a very good chance of snatching him, as they’ve been also giving Parker some very close looks recently.
And there are the Patriots, the Super Bowl champions who don’t really have a “natural” chance of grabbing Parker, but might trade up to draft him. Is that something Bill Belichick tends to do? Not really, but he has the ability to put together a very good package and it’s not unlike him to pull off some surprising moves. If Parker is really the guy he wants, and another wide receiver won’t hurt the Patriots one bit, don’t be surprised to see Belichick make an aggressive move for him.
