2014 World Cup – Day 5 Results & Table

It turns out Day 5 was quite special: We had our first hat trick of the World Cup courtesy of Thomas Muller as Germany ravaged Portugal to take the lead in Group G, our quickest goal of the tournament from Clint Dempsey to start off the United States victory over Ghana, and our first draw and goalless match as Iran and Nigeria disappointed everyone.

Match Highlights – Ghana vs United States

The USA are off to a great start, something they’re not used to in World Cups, beating Ghana 2-1 thanks to goals from Clint Dempsey and the winner by John Brooks, giving them a great advantage heading into their next to matches in Group G against the stronger European sides. Ghana might have been the better team for most of the match, but that one goal from Andre Ayew wasn’t enough.

2014 World Cup – Lionel Messi Can’t Win for Argentina on his Own

Beating Bosnia 2-1 was a decent way to start off a World Cup for Argentina and especially Lionel Messi, visibly burdened by the pressure and expectations. However, his attempt to make it all happen on his own didn’t work out so well until he and the team changed their approach. Carrying on that way will only result in heartache for him and the nation that expects so much of him.

2014 World Cup – Trends of Comebacks & Goals Continue

There’s a pattern to this world cup and it simply won’t go away. It’s not just the abundance of goals which makes us feel like we’re back in the 1950s when teams played with three defenders and seven attacking players, but knowing that scoring first means absolutely nothing, as Switzerland became the next team to not let an early slip ruin their day.
