On day 4 of the 2014 World Cup we saw three favorites claim wins, some more convincing than others. Switzerland were the next in the list of comebacks with a dramatic, last-minute win over Ecuador, France dominated against a dirty and violent Honduras with a brace from Karim Benzema while Lionel Messi had a nice opening to his own tournament, leading Argentina to a tough win over Bosnia.
Swtizerland 2 Ecuador 1: Another match with a comeback from an early goal. Ecuador struck first with Enner Valencia connecting through a header with a cross, but Switzerland equalized in the same manner early in the second half through Admir Mehmedi and scored the winner in the 92nd minute with sub Haris Seferovic coming through to give them three points, connecting with a through ball from Ricardo Rodriguez, finishing with two assists.
France 3 Honduras 0: France take the top spot in their group as once again the European team won against the Latin American side. Karim Benzema scored his first goal right before half time after Wilson Palacios fouled Paul Pogba inside the box, getting sent off with a second yellow card. Benzema was involved in the second goal, hitting the post before that ball rolled off Noel Valladares, scoring an own goal. Benzema made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute with a powerful shot, scoring off a rebound.
Argentina 2 Bosnia 1: An expected result although it was far from easy. Bosnia were the better team in the first half but had to fight their way back from an early own goal, a cross that clipped Sead Kolasinac. Lionel Messi had his moments in the second half, including a good enough run and 1-2 combination with Gonzalo Higuain to give Argentina a two goal lead. Vedad Ibisevic came on late and scored a goal that eventually didn’t matter.
The goal number remains high – 37 goals in 11 matches, while Honduras provided us with the second red card of the tournament, going to Wilson Palacios.
