The Chicago Cubs easily dominate the San Diego Padres through Jake Arrieta, the Los Angeles Dodgers extend their lead over the San Francisco Giants by beating them, and the Kansas City Royals remain the hottest team in the land, shutting out the Miami Marlins and winning their 9th in a row.

Washington Nationals 1  Baltimore Orioles 8: While the Nats are in worrying coast mode, the Orioles win their 2nd in a row to keep up with the Blue Jays and Red Sox. Kevin Gausman threw 6 shutout innings, while Chris Davis hit his 30th home run this season, and Matt Wieters got a couple of RBIs.

Houston Astros 1  Pittsburgh Pirates 7: A win that puts the Pirates 2.5 games behind in the wild card race, led by Ivan Nova with a complete game, allowing six hits and one run, while Gregory Polanco hit a couple of home runs for 3 RBIs.

Los Angeles Angels 2  Toronto Blue Jays 7: The Blue Jays remain on top of the AL East with their win, getting a solid day on the mound from R.A. Dickey, a home run from Michael Saunders, and three hits and 2 RBIs from the bat of Russell Martin at DH.

Texas Rangers 0  Cincinnati Reds 3: Dan Straily shuts out the Rangers for 6 innings, giving up only 3 this. Offense came from Joey Votto, driving in a couple of runs.

Kansas City Royals 1  Miami Marlins 0: Yordano Ventura shutout the Marlins in six innings of work, while a Lorenzo Cain single in the 6th inning provided the needed bit of offense. The Royals have won 9 in a row, now 4 games behind the wild card spot.

Boston Red Sox 2  Tampa Bay Rays 1: The Red Sox maintain their pleasant position with a narrow win, scoring early off of David Ortiz and Mookie Betts, while Clay Buchholz strikes out 9 in 6.1 innings of pitching.

Philadelphia Phillies 1  Chicago White Sox 9: Carlos Rondon earned the win, not allowing any runs in 6.2 innings with only 3 this, while Jose Abreu hit another home run, finishing with a team high 3 RBIs.

Colorado Rockies 4  Milwaukee Brewers 6: A triple from Hernan Perez in the 7th inning drove in two runs to give the Brewers the lead, and a sacrifice fly by Domingo Santana put them out of reach.

Detroit Tigers 8  Minnesota Twins 3: Tigers are 3 games behind in the wild card standings, enjoying Erick Aybar hitting a home run, and the 23rd of the season from Victor Martinez, as a 5th-to-7th inning rally turned the game around for the Tigers.

New York Mets 7  St. Louis Cardinals 4: Mets are above .500 while putting a dent in the Cards playoff race (still in one of the WC spots), overcoming Jonathon Niese leaving after one out. Wilmer Flores stood out with a 3-run homer, his 13th of the season.

Atlanta Braves 7  Arizona Diamondbacks 4: A strong day for Matt Kemp with 3 RBIs, hitting a double with the bases loaded to bring the Braves from one run down (another blown lead by Arizona) to grab hold and not let go of the lead.

New York Yankees 5  Seattle Mariners 1: C.C. Sabathia looked good for a change with 7 k’s and only 3 hits allowed in 7 innings of work, while Jacoby Ellsbury got a couple of RBIs with a two-run homer. The Mariners were limited to only 4 hits.

Cleveland Indians 1  Oakland Athletics 9: Bad day for the worry-free Indians, while Sean Manaea struck out 8 of their hitters, and Khris Davis clubbed his 33rd home run of the season, making it to 82 RBIs with 3 in this game.

San Francisco Giants 5  Los Angeles Dodgers 9: The Dodgers open a two-game lead on top of the NL West over the Giants, with rookie Rob Segedin having a special day: Hits a home run off Madison Bumgarner (Andrew Toles hit a home run too), and then racing to the hospital for the birth of his son.

Chicago Cubs 5  San Diego Padres 3: Jake Arrieta hurls 8 innings, allowing only 2 hits and no runs, and the early offense from Kris Bryant and Addison Russell was enough to contain the three runs from the Padres in the ninth and not lose the game.
