The Chicago Cubs pull off an impressive late comeback on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers, courtesy of two Kris Bryant home runs, allowing the San Francisco Giants to get closer with a shutout win over the Atlanta Braves. Meanwhile, in the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays take advantage of more losses by the Orioles and Red Sox to cement their place in the division’s lead.

Baltimore Orioles 4  New York Yankees 14: Luis Cessa improved to 4-0 with a 6-inning start, giving up 3 runs which didn’t matter, as Mark Texeria, Chase Headley and the scorching Gary Sanchez hit home runs, and Brett Gardner helped out also with 3 RBIs.

Colorado Rockies 5  Washington Nationals 8: A second straight win for the Nationals, holding the Rockies to just 6 hits (although they made a lot out of them). Jayson Werth and Daniel Murphy both hit home runs, and Gio Gonzalez struck out 5, on his way to his 9th earned win of the season.

Minnesota Twins 8  Toronto Blue Jays 15: A big and important win for the Blue Jays in the AL East race, hitting four home runs, with 3-run homers for Josh Donaldson and Justin Smoak, who like Russell Martin, picked up 5 RBIs.

Kansas City Royals 6  Boston Red Sox 3: The scorching Royals hand Boston another loss, enjoying a 8-strikeout performance from Ian Kennedy, and three homers by Eric Hosmer, Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain.

Los Angeles Angels 2  Detroit Tigers 4: Justin Upton had a strong day with two hits, including one home run, and two RBIs, while Justin Verlander struck out 8 and gave up only 4 hits in a 7.2 inning performance, improving to 14-7 this season.

Philadelphia Phillies 4  New York Mets 9: Bartolo Colon picked up the win with a nice start, but his two hits and two runs made just as much of an impact, although the biggest contribution came from Asdrubal Cabrera, hitting a couple of home runs.

San Diego Padres 6  Miami Marlins 7: The Padres held a four-run lead heading into the 7th, but singles from Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich and Martin Prado tied the game. In the 9th, a ground rule double by Chris Johnson won the game.

Cleveland Indians 12  Texas Rangers 1: A 20 run swing from the previous day as the Rangers shutout the Indians. Corey Kluber was terrific in his start, striking out 7, as the Indians finished with 17-for-41 hitting, including 4 hits for Roberto Perez, generating 3 runs.

Seattle Mariners 3  Chicago White Sox 1: Chris Sale had a great day with 14 strikeouts, but his offense got stumped by Felix Hernandez and Edwin Diaz, while Adam Lind and Franklin Gutierrez provided the necessary offense.

Pittsburgh Pirates 5  Milwaukee Brewers 3: A grand slam home run from Jordy Mercer was enough for the Pirates to hold off the Brewers, not letting a 3-run homer in the 6th for Milwaukee set up a late comeback.

Tampa Bay Rays 4  Houston Astros 5: Down one run in the bottom of the 9th, the Astros got a couple of home runs to lift them to victory; Carlos Correa and Evan Gattis did the work.

Oakland Athletics 1  St. Louis Cardinals 3: Luke Weaver earned his first major league win with 7 strikeouts in 6 innings, and an early Jedd Gyorko two-run homer gave the Cardinals enough of a cushion to win the game.

Cincinnati Reds 3  Arizona Diamondbacks 4: Three of the runs in this game came in the 10th inning, the last of them being Brandon Drury scoring off of a wild pitch by Blake Wood, giving the D-Backs the walk off win.

Chicago Cubs 6  Los Angeles Dodgers 4: Aroldis Chapman had a chance to get a save with two k’s, his 10th for the Cubs, coming back from two runs down thanks to a couple of home runs by Kris Bryant (35 this season) and Jason Heyward scoring on a wild pitch by Kenley Janses.

Atlanta Braves 0  San Francisco Giants 7: Jeff Samardzija didn’t have the best of starts, but ended up getting the shutout win through 7 innings of work, with the offense Angel Pagan, Joe Panik and Brandon Belt getting the job done from the plate.
