This is going to be a difficult season for Kevin Durant. He joined the Golden State Warriors, which to many feels like betraying the Oklahoma City Thunder, making him something of a ring-chaser, resulting in all the memes making fun of him, including an interesting one depicting him as Gollum from Lord of the Rings, just as he finally puts his hand on the Ring of Power.
The meme doesn’t suggest Durant is going to be consumed by the one ring like Gollum, or anyone else who spends too much time around it in the story does. It simply makes fun of his departure from the Thunder, by going to the team most likely to win a championship next season even without him. In short? Taking the easy route, something superstars are always criticized for, especially when Durant didn’t have it so bad where he already was.
To help the “haters” with context against Durant, are his tweets against LeBron James (although he didn’t mention him by name) when the four-time MVP packed his bags and left Cleveland for Miami, and then left Miami for Cleveland. Durant made tweets about loyalty and the sort at the time. For someone who reads and cares about everything said and written about him, Durant has been probably busy since making his decision, and will be once the season begins.
To end this little segment about Durant, loyalty, memes and Lord of the Rings, we’ll finish with “All that is gold does not glitter”, a poem from Lord of the Rings that actually describes Aragorn, but sits pretty well with the Durant storyline this season, especially if he fails to win a championship.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The Crownless again shall be king.
