David Ortiz

The Wild Card Standings in the National League keep switching, this time the New York Mets grabbing one of the spots after crushing the Atlanta Braves, while the St. Louis Cardinals lost to a 9th inning home run by Ryan Braun. In the American League, the Boston Red Sox open up a bigger lead in the AL East by beating the Toronto Blue Jays, while the New York Yankees lost, giving the Baltimore Orioles some breathing room after they beat the Detroit Tigers.

Tampa Bay Rays 4  New York Yankees 2: The Yankees playoff bid takes a hit with the end of their 7-game winning streak. The Rays hit 3 home runs off of Luis Cessa and that was it, while Matt Andriese helped out with 5 innings and earning the win.

Boston Red Sox 11  Toronto Blue Jays 8: The Red Sox open a 2-game lead over the Blue Jays and Orioles, lifted from behind by David Ortiz with a 3-run homer that put them ahead for good. Boston used 9 pitchers in the win.

Baltimore Orioles 3  Detroit Tigers 1: The Orioles win 2 in a row vs Detroit, pushing them back in the wild card chase. Chris Tillman didn’t pitch much better than Justin Verlander, but ended up getting the win, thanks to the home runs of Jonathan Schoop and Michael Bourn.

Los Angeles Dodgers 0  Miami Marlins 3: The Marlins hold the Dodgers to only 4 hits, with Jose Urena in charge of the four-hitting, needing one out for the complete game. Christian Yelich and Justin Bour made the offense tick with an RBI each.

New York Mets 10  Atlanta Braves 3: The Mets retake the playoff spot from the Cardinals in the Wild Card standings, carried by good 7-inning pitching from Seth Lugo, and a grand slam home run from Yoenis Cespedes, his 30th homer of the season.

Philadelphia Phillies 2  Washington Nationals 3: The Nats win their third in a row against Philadelphia, with Gio Gonzalez tossing 7 strong innings, providing Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rendon a cushion for their runs to mean something.

Cincinnati Reds 8  Pittsburgh Pirates 0: The Reds shutout the Pirates as Brandon Finnegan gets the win, while lead off man Tyler Holt stood out with 3 hits and 3 RBIs, including one triple.

Kansas City Royals 2  Chicago White Sox 0: The Royals keep themselves in the playoff picture with a shutout of the White Sox, as Ian Kennedy (six innings, only one hit) leads the way. Chris Sale struck out 12 in 8 innings of work, but his offense didn’t help. Kennedy got runs from Kendrys Morales and Eric Hosmer, both with solo homers.

Cleveland Indians 7  Minnesota Twins 1: The Indians are only one game behind the Rangers for the AL Home field right, enjoying a 3-run homer by Carlos Santana and a 7-inning, 10-strikeout performance from Corey Kluber.

Milwaukee Brewers 2  St. Louis Cardinals 1: The Brewers mess the wild card spot for the Cardinals, as Ryan Braun hit a 9th inning home run to win the game, despite Tyler Thornburg ruining the work of Zach Davies in the previous inning.

Texas Rangers 2  Los Angeles Angels 3: Jered Weaver struck out 8 while holding the Rangers to only 4 hits in 6.2 innings. Andrelton Simmons hit a couple of home runs for the Angels, including in the sixth inning, responding to Adrian Beltre, and taking the lead for good.

Seattle Mariners 3  Oakland Athletics 2: Mike Zunino opened the game with a 2-run homer and the A’s tied it up. However, a 9th inning RBI single by Ketel Marte had no response, as the M’s moved on to win their 5th in a row, putting them 3.5 games behind the wild card spot.

San Francisco Giants 5  Arizona Diamondbacks 3: The Giants make sure no one threatens their wild card spot, while they move to 3 games behind the Dodgers. Matt Moore struck out 11, Denard Span hit his 10th home run of the season, and the Giants completed the D-Backs sweep.

Colorado Rockies 3  San Diego Padres 2: The Rockies win with a 10th inning home run from Mark Reynolds, hit 13th of the year.

Chicago Cubs 9  Houston Astros 5: The Cubs continue to lead the NL Central and the majors, thwarting the Astros dreams of postseason games. Jake Arrieta wasn’t great but still earned the win, while Addison Russell and Jose Soler hit home runs, as the Cubs scored the first nine runs of the game.
