Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls – Too Good too Soon?

This isn’t about past statistics and seasons. This is about a gut feeling, and not a good one regarding Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls. There’s no hotter team and no better player in the league right now. The Chicago Bulls, after their 95-87 win over the Milwaukee Bucks last night, with Rose scoring 30 and dishing 17 assists, a career high and only the third player in Bulls history with a 30-15 game, look like the beasts of the East.

They’ve won 12 of their last 13 games which included wins over Orlando and Miami on the road. They’re 2.5 games ahead of the Celtics who are having a end of season dip like last year. Derrick Rose is solidifying his MVP case, averaging nearly 27 points and 7 assists in the last 10 games, leading the Bulls on their steamrolling track. That’s the thing – are they getting hot too soon? It’s always great to peak during March-April, but the Bulls have been on a tear for a few months now, losing only 5 times during the last two months. They do have a game against the Celtics in April, a potential preview for the Eastern conference finals, but I don’t buy this slump thing from the Celtics. It happened last year. It happened to the Lakers last year. Both teams reached the NBA finals.

The Boston Celtics won on the road in the 2010 playoffs, a lot. They beat the Cavs and the Orlando Magic without home advantage. I think there’s a feeling they can make it without it again. There’s that swagger and arrogance to them – probably beacuse of Rondo and Garnett, but the Celtics aren’t playing well right now, but I don’t think it means they’re going to bomb in the playoffs. Until Chicago prove otherwise, the Celtics are still the team to beat in the East.

26.8 Points and 6.8 Assists in the last 10 games

Down in Florida, Miami are going through a pretty enjoyable phase. The opponents are softer, the bad days are dissapearing in the rear view mirror and the LeBron/Wade/Bosh thing is clicking better than ever. If they stay 3rd and Philly stay sixth, that would be the most comfortable opponent for the Heat crew. A sweep, with ease I predict. Finishing second in the East could land them with a NY series and despite the Knicks’ terrible form (losing 8 of their last 9), they’re going to be a lot more trouble than the Sixers. Orlando will devour anyone in the first round.

Back to the Bulls – I think they know they have to get the home court advantage, so right now, there’s no taking their foot of the gas pedal. Rose is going to keep racking up the big minutes and numbers. He’s going to win the MVP. Boozer, Noah and Deng are going to clawing and scratching and getting things done. Question is – how much will they have left for the playoffs, for a six-seven game series against the Celtics, the Heat or the Magic?

  1. What an idiotic post. What’s the alternative to playing this well? Playing worse. So, it’d be better if they played worse? Think for one goddam second and you won’t write stupid shit.

  2. I admire rose and deng’s passion but their team is playing seasonal ball. I really don’t see um winning a game in the series. They don’t rest and hate to loose. If you seen alot of minutes now, wait til a series with the magic, heat, or celtics. They are gonna need um tired or not. Rose cannot afford to sit on the bench now and defienetly not later in the postseason. Watson could not cover what Rose does against rondo, or neither guard in the east. This is really bad for the bulls. It’s too many minutes because there is no back up, when he sits, they decline. Last night they played the bucks and the grizzlies before that, You think a win’s going to be the outcome in a series with a tough team? Lebron answered that question the last two years. Was burnt out to get it all.

  4. Last time I checked MJ’s teams played great seasonal ball and won championships without much rest. The Spurs did it. The Lakers have done it. Maybe it’s just they are one of the few teams deciding these games are just as important as the playoffs.

*Side-Note. As far as I’m concerned by numbers AND my eyes/intuition, Bulls are the team to beat in the east. Period. It’s like a boxing or mma fight. You become #1 contender (Celtics), and challenge the Champ (Lakers). They fight (play) and the champ wins. Does that means the contender is still to challenge? No, he has to fight his way back, and prove more then he did the last time to get there. Have they done that? No. They are neck and neck with the Heat now which are 2 & 3. Bulls are now the number 1 contender anyway you look at it.

PS – No Kendrick Perkins, Really? Rose rapes your paint and finishes like a BOSS.

    • @Chadreius I hate comparing anything and anyone to Michael Jordan. Ordinary Basketball dynamics have nothing to do with the way he and his teams played.
Many teams have played hard all the way and eventually won it but looking at last year, that wasn’t the case, both with the Celtics and the Lakers. Chicago have what it takes to beat the Celtics, who aren’t as good as last year I feel, but I am worried that Rose will be worn out at a certain point. Maybe I’m wrong. Hopefully I’m wrong. I don’t want to see another Celtics – Lakers final.

  5. Why does everyone not want to compare anyone to MJ? He’s a person. There was nothing different from anyone except he practiced til perfect, applied his knowledge and observations, and used his skills to their full potential. He’s similar to wilt. They both were above the crop for their time without a doubt. You can always compare teams of times because team play isn’t really affected by time in general. I agree not comparing players because AI in MJ’s time if he had that crossover or LeBron with his pure drive were there, MJ might have a different legacy.

On Topic: Bulls are too good at the perfect time.

  6. That ballhog with a horrible fg% just dropped 36 and 10 on 11-20 fg and 12-13 ft. That ballhog beat the heat 3-0. The ballhog has propelled the bulls to the top in the east and 1 game behind SA for the best in the league
