The 2017 MLB Season began with 3 games, including the World Series champions Chicago Cubs losing their opener in St. Louis to the Cardinals, and two walk off hits to decide games, including one by Chris Owings as the Arizona Diamondbacks stunned the San Francisco Giants, who got 2 home runs from Madison Bumgarner.
Chicago Cubs 3 St. Louis Cardinals 4: The defending World Series champions didn’t get to start 2017 with a big win over their big rivals. Jon Lester looked good, but the bullpen disappointed, especially Mike Montgomery, who gave up the Randal Grichuk single in the 9th that walked off everyone, and gave the Cardinals their 1-0 start to the season. Seung Hwan Oh, despite blowing the lead with the home run to Willson Contreras, ended up earning the win.
New York Yankees 3 Tampa Bay Rays 7: The talk about the young bombers was held off for opening day, as the Yankees didn’t hit any home runs while Masahiro Tanaka didn’t last 3 innings. On the other side, Chris Archer (who the Rays managed to hang on to) did a good job, striking out 5 while throwing for 7 innings. Logan Morrison and Evan Longoria stood out with a home run each to open the season for the underdogs in the AL East.
San Francisco Giants 5 Arizona Diamondbacks 6: Despite a good game from Madison Bumgarner, which included a couple of home runs and striking out 11 in 7 innings (while giving up 3 runs), it wasn’t enough as the bullpen (what’s new) did poorly, be it Derek Law and especially Mark Melancon, who gave up two runs in the 9th inning. Chris Owings had a couple of hits in the game for the D-Backs, including the walk-off single to give Arizona a nice start to a season with less expectations, which is probably healthier for them.
