A busy day of baseball included the Boston Red Sox and Chris Sale shutting out the Tampa Bay Rays to extend their AL East lead, the Cleveland Indians getting a big walk off homer from Yan Gomes, and Grand Slam homers in other games, including Brian Dozier and Jake Lamb winning games with them.
Miami Marlins 7 Washington Nationals 3: A solid performance by Vance Worley and especially Giancarlo Stanton hitting his 38th home run of the season lifted the Marlins over the Nats.
Chicago Cubs 3 San Francisco Giants 6: The Giants get a good day from Ty Blach, but mostly got through on a three-run homer by Buster Posey, giving the Giants an early cushion to build on.
Detroit Tigers 3 Pittsburgh Pirates 6: Chad Kuhl wasn’t too sharp, but he was good enough to allow the Pirates offense to carry him to a W. Turns out he gave them their best offense, finishing with a couple of RBIs. Andrew McCutchen also took part of the scoring, hitting home run number 23 this season.
New York Yankees 2 Toronto Blue Jays 4: The Yankees drop to four games behind the Red Sox, succumbing to a couple of home runs by Josh Donaldson and some terrific pitching by J.A. Happ.
Colorado Rockies 1 Cleveland Indians 4: The Rockies were leading by one run through nine innings thanks to a Justin Blackmon home run, but then Austin Jackson hit an RBI single, followed by a three-run homer by Yan Gomes for the stunning walk-off win.
San Diego Padres 7 Cincinnati Reds 3: Jose Pirela had 4 hits in 4 at bats, finishing with 3 runs. Yangervis Solarte was the Padres most productive hitter, finishing with 3 RBIs, including a two-run homer.
Texas Rangers 4 New York Mets 5: The Mets stop a four-game losing streak, backed by Chris Flexen who picked up his first career win despite giving up two home runs, and three home runs by their offense including a two-run shot from Travis d’Arnaud.
Boston Red Sox 2 Tampa Bay Rays 0: Life is good with Chris Sale on the mound. The Red Sox’ ace pitched for 8 innings and gave up only 2 hits while striking out 13 in one of his best performances of the last two years.
Philadelphia Phillies 5 Atlanta Braves 2: Zach Eflin gave up 7 hits but overall had a solid day on the mound for the Phillies, leaning on offense from Odubel Herrera, including a two-run homer to bring his tally up to 12 this season.
Houston Astros 5 Chicago White Sox 8: The White Sox turn to rookie catcher Kevan Smith, hitting a home run with one player on and two outs as well as a 2-RBI double, overcoming the best team in the American League.
Milwaukee Brewers 4 Minnesota Twins 11: The Twins hit 5 home runs (4 off of Matt Garza). None were better than the Grand Slam homer by Brian Dozier, his 21st of the season, finishing the game with 5 RBIs.
St. Louis Cardinals 10 Kansas City Royals 3: The Cardinals beat the Royals once more, getting 14 hits in the process, including a 3-run homer by Jedd Gyorko.
Los Angeles Dodgers 3 Arizona Diamondbacks 6: A rare loss for the Dodgers, who dropped a two run lead in the 6th inning, twice giving up home runs to Jake Lamb, including the game decider, a grand slam homer in the 7th.
Seattle Mariners 7 Oakland Athletics 6: The Mariners continue their surge towards a wild card spot, pulling off a massive comeback, culminating with a 10th inning home run by Leonys Martin, followed by Edwin Diaz with the important save.
Baltimore Orioles 2 Los Angeles Angels 3: The Angels got only 6 hits in the game (Orioles had 8), but made almost every one of them count. C.J. Cron stood out with two hits, each for an RBI single, and Parker Bridwell was terrific on the mound, allowing one run while striking out 4 in 7 innings.
