Premier League Fantasy: Best Players in Gameweek 1

Premier League Fantasy: Best Players in Gameweek 1

Now that gameweek 1 of the Premier League fantasy game is over, it’s a good opportunity to check out the point leaders in each position. This week it includes a combination of almost unknowns like Ahmed Hegazy and Sam Vokes, along with stars like Christian Eriksen and Romelu Lukaku.

Goalkeepers

Jonas Lössl

Jonas Lössl, Huddersfield: The 28-year old Dane, on loan from Mainz, is the only goalkeeper in the first week with 9 points, picking them up after keeping a clean sheet in Huddersfield’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, along with 4 saves and 2 bonus points. The best part? He costs only £4.5 million, and only 1.6% of fantasy owners picked him.

2 other goalkeepers finished with 7 points: Hugo Lloris of Tottenham (quite expected) and Ben Foster of West Brom (sorta expected too).

Defenders

Ben Davies

Ahmed Hegazy, West Brom: Another player on loan (from Al-Ahly in Egypt), Hegazy (or Hegazi according to the Premier League’s books) finished with 15 points, the highest score of any player this week. The 26-year old Egyptian scored the only goal in the Baggies 1-0 win, earned a clean sheet and picked up 3 bonus points. He now costs £4.6 million, and is selected by 7.7% of teams.

Ben Davies, Tottenham: Davies finished with 14 points following his part in Spurs 2-0 win over Newcastle. 1 goal, clean sheet and 3 bonus points, but he did pick up a yellow card, submitting a point. He now costs £5.5 million, and is owned by 5.6% of the teams.

Midfielders

Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen, Tottenham: Another Dane, this time one that’s a bit more popular among fantasy owners. Eriksen is now owned by 15.9% of teams, valued at £9.5 million. Eriksen was one of the expensive players who delivered over the weekend, finishing with 2 assists in Spurs 2-0 win, along with a clean sheet and 3 bonus points. Good enough for 12 points.

Two other midfielders finished with 11 points: Mohamed Salah of Liverpool (1 goal, 1 assist) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Manchester United (2 assists, 1 clean sheet).

Forwards

Romelu Lukaku

Sam Vokes, Burnley: Maybe the most surprising name on the list, Vokes scored twice for Burnley in their stunning 3-2 win over Chelsea, along with 3 bonus points. The 27-year old now costs £6 million, and is owned by 4.4% of teams. He finished with 13 points, like the two other players to follow.

Jamie Vardy, Leicester: Vardy is the only player on the list this week who was on the losing side of his encounter (4-3 to Arsenal). Still, 2 goals and 3 bonus points were good enough to put him as joint-leader. He now costs £8.5 million, and is owned by 10% of teams.

Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United: Lukaku costs £11.5 million, but is worth it, hence 50.9% picking him to play. He scored 2 goals in his Manchester United debut, and also got 3 points for the bonus.

Final number

We finish with the current most popular players: Lukaku, as mentioned, is owned by over half the teams, and is the most popular forward at the moment. Dele Alli of Tottenham is the most popular midfielder, owned by 37.9% of teams. David Luiz of Chelsea appears in 25.1% of teams, the most selected defender. At goalkeeper, it’s David de Gea, owned by 32.3% of teams.
