This year was supposed to be different. Turns out nothing has changed. The Toronto Raptors still fold like a cheap suit when they face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. Even the memes have a strong sense of dejavu.
The Cavaliers came into Toronto and took the first two games by force. If the first game was somewhat close, the second one was a peak demonstration by LeBron James of his full capabilities, and especially his killer fade away jumper, knocking it down 7 times in the second half, with each one slowly sending Raptors fans into a deeper state of desperation.
This isn’t a very strong Cavaliers team, but thing clicked better than usual in Game 2, which mostly means Kevin Love playing like the guy who once dominated in Minnesota. 31 points, and less physical awkwardness, although James playing so well made it possible for him, and everyone else, to get involved and make a big difference.
Where do we go from here? Looks like another Celtics – Cavaliers conference finals, with both teams up 2-0, although the Cavs are taking the lead home, while Boston are travelling to Philly. For the Raptors, a loss in this series could finally mean massive changes. Who knows – Dwane Casey might end up being coach of the year and getting fired in the span of one summer.
