Cristiano Ronaldo Being Great and Being “Evil”

Summer vacation start early this year for Cristiano Ronaldo. No Champions League final, the league title is nearly out of grasp. No World Cup or Euro to play in. More time to spend with her and watch some tennis from the Madrid Open.

I wonder how he feels, about the whole Messi comparison. We know how he feels about the Barcelona matter, which rose to even greaterΒ proportionsΒ than usual this year and past month, with the overflow of Clasicos,Β controversiesΒ and Jose Mourinho press conferences.

After his incredible 2007-2008 season, while Barcelona were struggling in their final Frank Rijkaard days, Cristiano Ronaldo looked primed to be the best in the world for years and years. Being so dominant in the Premier League, the best in the world (which has declined since his departure), scoring 31 league goals and a total of 66 in his final three league campaigns with United, despite all the antagonism he created, it was hard to find anyone to dispute his claim to the world number 1.

Then came Guardiola, and turned Barcelona in the finest tuned machine of soccer in the world. Barcelona always were sort of the neutrals favorite over Real Madrid, that was always my perception. Real mean success, and even though success gets you fans, it also gets you plenty of haters. Especially when the success seems to be achieved by money and power, not ‘ideology’. The fact is that Real Madrid’s two consecutive league titles came after the Galacticos project was declared a failure and the team was actually built in a sound and balanced.

The rise of Barcelona in 2009 meant Real turned back to those ways, with Florentino Perez capturing the presidency once again. Cristiano Ronaldo seemed bound to the Blancos for a few years and after 2008-2009, the deal was inevitable and finally sealed, making Ronaldo the most expensive and highest paid soccer player in the world.

Personally, I’ve never liked him or at least the perception of the human being he seems to be. Just by taking his comment after winning all those awards after 2008 – “I should have won first, second and third place seriously, you can’t like the guy. Seeing him swapping models, his bitchin’ little boy behavior on the pitch at times, spitting at the camera after the World Cup exit – not exactly a classy role model.

As a player, he’s perfect. Yes, perfect, something even Lionel Messi isn’t. His speed, strength, shooting ability with both feet from pretty much anywhere on the pitch. Aerial game, passing ability. His constant threat on goal. Always going for one more. You can’t dream of anything else. Sure, it doesn’t always work, but Ronaldo’s numbers, 75 goals in 90 matches since arriving at Madrid, you can’t ask for more.

If Ronaldo was on the losing side in the Lionel Messi popularity contest before Jose Mourinho arrived, the self proclaimed ‘special one’ wasn’t about to make it better. The good – They seem to have connected. All player seem to connect with Mourinho and give them their all. I think Mourinho even tried to change the fact that having Cristiano Ronaldo means you need your entire game to go through him. It succeeded to a certain extent. It didn’t get him over the Barcelona hurdle.

Real Madrid, especially with their backs against the wall, are totally reliant on Ronaldo’s ability to create something for himself. It reminds me of basketball, when final plays are drawn up for the usual suspects. And that’s where the big difference between him and Messi come in to play. Messi might be the big finisher for Barcelona, but I don’t believe he’d be this good and productive if it wasn’t for Iniesta and Xavi. Argentina national team anyone?

During the recent Mourinho – Guardiola wars, Ronaldo seemed to be the only Real Madrid player to follow his manager in comments and attitude. The “we’ve been robbed” signs and attitude was probably flowing across the squad, but Ronaldo showed it the best. The frustration was exploding in the final match, when a Ronaldo fall after being fouled dropped Mascherno and wrongly got Higuain’s openerΒ disallowed.

Despite all the anguish and anger, Real’s season is pretty much over. There’s still that tiny chance they get some miracle divine intervention to get them the La Liga title. Unlikely, nearly impossible. Summer without big tournaments means more time toΒ delveΒ into transfer rumors and possible changes. I’m sure Real, despite having an All-Star squad, will be deeply involved. I also wonder how much of the resentment and feeling of being “robbed” by anyone and everyone will linger over the summer, and effect Ronaldo and Real Madrid towards the next season.

  1. What a piece of SH..IT. Messi is by far and at the distance better than you beloved Ronaldo, in those the areas than you claim Ronaldo is at his best. Only an Yankee point of view Ronaldo have better skills than Messi, this child will be the number one of the world next 5 years. Where was in the Portugal Team you man “Ronnie” during world cup?, only Messi disapeared?. Be more focused & objective.

  2. i think you are in love with ronaldo, thats good…doens’t change the fact that messi is by far better than him…And yeah,in the second goal to real madrid at the bernabeu im sure iniesta and xavi told him how to do it,”just go right through those 5 five guys and score”..yeah he had nothing to do with that either..there is a reason why americans sucks at football.

  3. Quite correct:
    Ronaldo is perfect
    Messi currently the best

Not a contradiction. Even Messi lovers should see that.

  4. what a shit article.. wow.. lol ” Argentina national team anyone? ” LOL um PORTUGAL? HELLLLLLOOOOOO???

  5. Time will tell and prove that Messi is
the best footballer. Futbol ain’t about height strength
power or looks guy. It’s about what you do with that
round ball I’n the pitch. Messi has made goals
that Ronaldo can’t even dream of making. Messi’s bad run with
the national team was when maradona was I’n charge. Ronaldo can
beat a defender I’n speed and hit that ball with power
while messi gets around 4 to 5 defenders and places the ball
where the goalkeeper can’t reach. Plain and simple. Ronaldo
Is not even I’n the top three players I’n the world. And will never be
A legend I’n history while messi at 23 years of age is already being consider
by many that know more about futbol than you and me as the best ever!!!

  6. Two problems with the article (1) when has the English league ever been the best league, not in the last 30 years I’ve been watching, all the greatest players have avoided it (Ronaldo, Maradona, Pele and now Messi) and have instead stayed in Italy or Spain. In fact most players that do well in England do not do well when they move to the Italian or Spanish league (see Beckham and Ronaldo). (2) soccer is about winning games and making the players around you better, while individual technical skills are valuable, it is that intangible quality, which cannot be taught, that separates the greats from the ordinary player. Ronaldo has not been able to make the players around him better and he has not really played well in high pressure situations (whether at league or international level). In any event, in a skill v. skill challenge I am not sure Messi loses to R7.

    • @Xavier I agree with your second point, but Ronaldo hasn’t been successful in Spain?! 55 league goals in 59 matches?!

  7. Are you guys idiots? His world cup reference is referring to the record messi broke for the most shots taken without finding the back of the net. It was like 33 or something. Atleast crisitano scored

  8. heloo everybody… whoever wrote this article is very blind and doesn’t have sense of good football… he is acting like a hooligan…your ronlado was good in England because english league is not that good thats why the best player in england is nobody in spain now… he is just a looser with evil attitude.. how can you ever compare with thae arrogant ronaldo with no football brain… the only good thing about him is he can run fast, cans shoot and cry like a lunatic in every game…

  9. This article is GARBAGE… obviously written by one of the nearly extinct Ronaldo groupies. What did Ronaldo do in the world cup? What does he do in big matches? Ronaldo shrivels up like a little girl and does what he does best cry and complain! The majority of messi’s goals were plays started by him and finished by him. Ronaldos goals are mostly tap ins. I don’t know what is perfect about him? Is I that your just in love with him? Wake up and realize Ronaldo is nothing but a publicity stunt… He fills up seats the seats at the bernabeu and sells all those No. 7 jerseys that’s about it… Messi posseses the true skill and love for the game! Messi’s pace with the ball on his feet is unmatchable even for your husband Ronaldo! You can see the jealousy in to to Ronaldos eyes whenever he is asked about messi, even when messi scores on real Madrid and the camera focuses on Ronaldos reaction you can tell how furious and jealous he is of messi! Ronaldo can have all the women and money in the world but he will never come close to messis skill, power, technique, and humility!

  10. yo totally agreed ronaldo is way better than messi am tired of this shit just accept it barcelona has a great team xavi iniesta and them serve messi to score they d rather give the bal lto him to score than them score the goal cristiano way better than messi and ppl messi didnt do shit in the world cup so shut up and at least ronaldo scored and they beat spain 4 0 in a friendly and ronaldo scored an amazing goal fisallowed like always by stupid fk reffs hala madrid and viva cr7 !!!

  11. Are you serious?? (1) Skill for skill what does messi do better then Ronaldo?? That’s right nothing. (2) everybody passes judgment on r7 because of his attitude but who cares. I’m not trying to be his friend and neither is anyone else in soccer. They are there to play a game period. Messi has a leg up based on attitude which is hilarious because he’s only played on one team and that team is showed favoritism. Btw did you watch the Classico when messi blasted a ball at the fans?? Real class (3) if messi is so great then why not break free of barca and show the world what you can do without them. Barca currently has at least 3/10 of the worlds best players (including messi). Messi is phenomenal but relax the little midget doesn’t have the physical tools to truly compete and that’s why he doesn’t go to the epl cause they won’t blow the whistle for nothing and he’ll be just an above average Joe.

  12. ok first of all what is the with all the comparisons wif messi and ronaldo? both have totally different playing styles. ronaldo is however a hell of a lot better sorry but thats the truth. even if you dont think so. its just out there. maybe if ronaldo was still in manchester united he would be better off. but i personally love ronaldo and nothing in the worldd will make me change that. so imagine millions of people like me (which there are none, but he DOES have fans so deal with it) you couldnt change them either. πŸ™‚

  13. Any spazzer can write a blog with his own version of hysterical prattling and still there would some takers some where to lap it up.

    This is one such attempt…

  14. Everyone who thinks Ronaldo is waaaay or even a little better than messi is -I’m so sorry – WRONG! Yes, CR7 is probably the best all-round player the (club) football world has ever seen, but his skills can’t compete with those Messi has mastered. You can’t expect a 1.69 m man to do headers all the time. But Messi can do it…at least pretty often (Manchester, Zaragoza(?)…). I’m trying to say that Messi never had a chance to be as “physical” as ronaldo is due to his size. But that’s just the way Darwin wanted him to be^^. Therefore he’s fast and unerring? and he definitely hast the best dribbling skills ever! He’s not perfect, indeed nobody is. But there ARE reasons why Messi’s teams – when playing against CR teams – almoust! everytime get the better results. Not the refs or UEFA, not just Iniesta and Xavi, not Ronaldo’s begging for freekicks or anything else but simply messi’s beautiful skills. That’s it…my ode to messi. Sorry for the (hopefully not too) bad english, I’m from germany πŸ™‚

  15. People like HC27 really don’t understand football. There are so many things wrong with the post… Firstly, he says what skill does Messi do better than Ronaldo? The answer- two of the most important skills in football, his dribbling and passing. He has the ability to beat 4/5, even six players and either score or assist. Then there is his ability to make incisive passes, Ronaldo is not capable of as he lacks the vision needed. This is what makes him the truly special of the two.

Secondly, why would Messi leave a club that is currently the best in the world? It makes absolutely no sense. Anyone who knows the game can see with the ability he has, it’s glaringly obvious he would succeed in any league. He’s shown against Arsenal and United, two of the best teams in the premier league what he is capable of- so how on earth someone can come to the conclusion he does not have the tools to succeed in the premier league is just astonishigly ignorant…

The fact is, his second goal against Madrid tells you all you need to know about him as a player. He beat one of the best and most physical defences around and produced a cool finish. Therefore, how on earth could someone who is capable of that, not succeed in the premier league? Comments like those show a complete lack of knowledge.

  16. after winning all those awards after 2008 – β€œI should have won first, second and third place seriously, you can’t like the guy. This is something i hate. If you want to make some1 the villain u just make stupid meaning out of their statements. He was asked that do you think you are the best player in the world and he responded like this. Had he said yes i am the best you would have said he is arrogant, so he dodged the question and said smthin like that in a jest. Now u find some other fault. Thing is all these england and epl suporters hate him because he torments england in internationals and he left epl’s best club for real madrid. He did a lot for manchester, they were on the decline and he revived them. But all that is forgotten because he left.thats ridiculous

  17. Messi might win the ballon dor again , but ronaldo is still better than messi, because he can be sensational in any league and he does not need to hide behind xavi and iniesta….. Messi wont leave barcelona ,,that dsnt have anything to do with loyalty,,,he wouldnt be as successful anywhere else. Last year he scored 30 plus in la liga ,he repeated the same this year,,,when was the last time that sm 1 scored 30 plus in epl.( 2008 ronaldo). Thing is that he would just be one of the worlds best players like rooney , drogba, fabregas etc had it not been for barcelona , xavi and iniesta

  18. His success ,,against epl clubs ,,,scored four against a less than full strength arsenal. scored a header which is 70 percent xavi’s goal for such a wonderful pass against manchester in the final, against chelsea he was nowhere to be seen, against rsenal first leg he vanished 2010 again. This year he scored 2 against arsenal, one goal was no doubt brilliant, but other was against ten men,,,jus like his second goal against madrid…..i noe it makes no sense that he leaves barcelona,,,but i wonder how he would do if he has to leave

  19. @ Pranev- It’s always the same tired, old and misinformed arguements from CR fans. First off, united were never in decline. Lets get that straight. They were a team full of top class players. After all, they are still set top without Ronaldo… Yes, he was our best player but just like he is at Madrid, he was playing with great players who created many chances for him. The likes of Rooney, Scholes, Giggs, Tevez, etc would often assist him- just as Di Maria, Alonso, Marcelo, Ozil, Kaka (when fit) do at Madrid… This is a fact CR fans conviniently overlook. They try to make out he does it all by himself but ignore the fact he has played for two of the strongest teams in both leagues… Therefore, like Messi, he also is lucky to play in a great team, just like he did in England. Look how many world class players there are in both teams..

Concerning Messi, what you are saying is just pure speculation. Where is the evidence to back up your claims that he wouldn’t be as successful anywhere else? There isn’t any. However, given his form and statistics for Barca, there is evidence to show he could shine just as much, maybe more than Ronaldo did in the premier league.. As I said in my last post, his perfromances against Arsenal two seasons running and United show that. Looking at the game against Chelsea, he gave arguably the best left back in the world the run around at stamford bridge… That’s something Ronaldo has never done against Cole.. He’s always struggled against him. As for the game at the Emirates, did he not provide the assist for Villa and come close to scoring? Therefore, how is that disappearing? Also, you say his header against United was 70% thanks to Xavi but using that logic, I could say Ronaldo’s header in the final of the copa del Ray was 70% of Di Maria, given that they were both very good headers…

  20. Then there is the 10 men excuse Ronaldo fans use for his stunning goal against madrid… Hmmm, lets not forget that he still had to evade four world class defenders… They couldn’t stop him.. When has Ronaldo ever scored a goal like that? The whole Pepe would have stopped him is laughable, given that he skinned him a number of times in their recent meetings. Remember in the league game at the Bernabeu that run where he beat him twice, only to be denied by Casillas? Pepe couldn’t stop him then, could he… Just accept it was a stunning goal that will forever be remembered as one of the best in CL history. Just as Messi’s name will go down as one of, maybe the greatest in footballing history at the end of his career. Ronaldo is a fantastic player but Messi is on another level.

  21. If ronaldo were in barcelona team he would have scored more goals, messi has best players around him, he has spanish national team world cup winner around him thats why messi scor goals, otherwise he cant do nothing for his national team, ronaldo is the best and he is more comple player then messi, in the last game of champion league we all saw ronaldo got the ball from messi and dribble and messi couldnt get the ball back from him

  22. Haha guys who think of Cristiano Ronaldo to be a bs.n think messi is better.you’re deffenatly wrong children.Look were ronaldo came from.hes been In lisbon a close to bieng pro team, then when on to one of the biggest clubs in the world Manchester United, at the age of 18,shit they wanted him at 16 by another team but thought he was to young, but then yet again at 18 in the biggest clubs n then to Los Blanco’s at around 24.come on you guys must be very stupid ,messi was never that big he was always in the academy for barcelona n finally a few yrs ago he came up -wow dont me wrong hes great but has and wont ever accomplish what CRISTIANO “DOS SANTOS” AVEIRO RONALDO-CR7 has in this life time!.god bless to Ronaldo-just needs to fix his rolemodeling a bit but by far the Best

  23. Ronaldo had sometime made it, but messi is making it now. Lets grasp the truth of the hole matter, no one can forever be on top of the world. explore d likes of wood d golfer, kaka a one time world best player, ultimate worrior of wwe e.t.c where are de today? Yesterday was cr7’s flowering and glisten moment but today, its messi and tomorrow some other person. Lets cherish those moment and tag our comment as to their haydays. To be candid… Equating d two’s achievement messi is dou of a little magnitude better than cr7.

  24. I disagree with your statement that Ronaldo is superior to Messi. You denigrate Messi by citing his perceived lack of performance during the World Cup, but fail to mention the fact that although he was not the guy scoring the goals during WC 2010, he was the guy providing the opportunities for others to score goals. His ability to drive the ball up the left side of the pitch and deliver it to someone who had a better angle was unselfish and is a further example of why he is the best player on Earth. Even Vincente del Bosque thought Messi was the best player at WC 2010. It takes more than goals to make someone great, and with 52 goals AND 26 assists so far this season Messi is a step above even the great Ronaldo.

  25. This article is totally right!
Yeah without Xavi and Iniesta? Messi would be nothing. He is nothing but just a “striker” without xavi and iniesta. Cristiano Ronaldo? He can bring the ball by his own and score it. If there are 2 ronaldo, one would be placed as midfielder and the other as striker. He’s so cool. No doubts!

  26. Here is the resolving of the comparison of Ronaldo and Messi.

Cristiano made a title challenging team (man utd), into title winners CHAMPIONS! back to back, for three years.. 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009 in those three years he achieved all he could at man utd, with one season particularly being his best 2007-2008 in which he amassed 42 goals in a season. I don’t know about you guys but i know that is beyond belief for a winger considering a wingers job is mostly to assist and chip in with some goals. the later season 2008-2009 he amassed over 30 goals once again playing as a winger which is still incredible. So at this point Cristiano Ronaldo had taken man utd to two champions league finals winning one, winning three consecutive premier league titles and some fa cups, carling cup and a super cup. Now that was three years of him being man utd star player, dominating defenses around europe, and remarkable consistency (THREE WHOLE YEARS). Am not trying to say he did it all alone but if you reason about it and actually watch the clips you will see that most of the things he did and the goals he scored were pure individual genius. He mastered his own free kick technique (individual genius) he mastered the act of cutting the ball back to deceive defenders and shoot with either foot accurately and with power (individual genius) heading prowess (individual genius) i could go on. All this was achieved by hard work in the training ground and was exhibited in matches effortlessly.

And the most important point of all he did this in the premier league, the league that is the fastest, most physical and the toughest league of all the dominant leagues. This is a fact please don’t argue, la liga is slow all about skill and attacking football, serie a is slow all about defending and strategic football, whilst the premier league combines all of these aspect in one making it the toughest league.

To conclude with Ronaldo he is now in la liga dominating along side with lionel messi, in his first season he scored 33 goals missing over a month with injuries and in this season he has scored 46 goals this isn’t easy because it normally takes a player some time to adjust to a new team let alone a whole new league and surrounding, so that just shows how much of a world beater Ronaldo is and he already has a better goal scoring record for real madrid than greats like the Brazilian Ronaldo and Raul. This again from playing as a winger.

Lionel messi established himself has a barcelona first team regular in the 2005-2006 season settling into a team that was jam packed with world class talent, Ronaldinho, Xavi, Eto, Deco etc, a hard feat to claim, then two years later he had to fill the shoes vacated by the supernatural Ronaldinho, which he did with un-rivaled grace, technique and guile and not to mention he added in the goal scoring dynamic and prowess Ronaldinho didn’t possess. Now the stage was set for the little argentine to go ahead and put his name amongst the greats of the game, he was then joined by a fellow la masia graduate Iniesta who together with Xavi would prove to be the best trifold in world football. Now let me say Barcelona were always a title winning side, dominating la liga due to Real madrids decline therefore all messi had to do was just fine tune a fantastic football team, but he did way more than that in 2008-2009 season lionel messi scored 38 goals in a sextuplet winning season for barcelona, he was the leading scorer of the three strikers of Barcelona who amassed almost 90 goals which shows how good barcelona were already with the two other strikers scoring around 23 goals each, bare in mind C ronaldo never had any other goal scoring partners at man utd which meant the team were solely and heavily relying on him in the 2007-2008 season and he never failed to deliver in a tougher league.

Carrying on with messi he continue to show how incredible he his winning trophies with barcelona and increasing his goal scoring tally year after year, 2009-2010 48 goals no injuries, 2010-2011 so far 52 goals no injuries all in all playing in a historical barcelona side which many believe to be the greatest of all club sides in history consisting of Xavi, Iniesta, David Villa, Pique, Busquets, Pedro, Puyol etc players who have all known each other since school days and have grown up to learn and master a certain idea of football Messi himself included. Although Barcelona are still great Messi continues to complement their style breaking records and assisting and scoring effortlessly individual goals right through out his time at Barcelona, Messi’s grace, dribbling speed, vision and eye for goal is second to none whilst his playing for Barcelona. He his so mesmerizing and consistent he has drawn comparison to the greats of the game Pele and Maradona.

Now look at it this way lionel messi has been at barcelona all his footballing life and only knows one way of playing football, most of his team mates have been playing with him for over eight years so they all know each other pretty well not to mention most of them are of the spanish euro and world cup winning team so they are all as good as it gets and messi just fits in perfectly. Messi has been playing in la liga all his footballing life and the leagues defenses are the worst of all dominant leagues whilst the premier league and serie a has the best defenses. and you mean to tell me a player like lionel messi wouldn’t absolutely demolish teams with such rubbish defenses in la liga let alone the Barcelona team.

Cristiano Ronaldo has moved from league to league and country to country dominating where ever he goes and he did this especially at his best in the premier league the best league in the world with ever changing team mates, they didnt know each other like the Barcelona team and they were not as good as the barcelona team yet he still dominated and took Man Utd from title challengers to champions. Now he his at Real Madrid and he is continuing to dominate in a new surrounding and a new league scoring goals for fun all be it in an easier league than the premiership and helping Real Madrid win their first trophy in 3 years with a towering header against barcelona justifying his price tag (Cristiano Ronaldo = trophies doesn’t matter what title challenging team.) All this playing on the wing.

Now tell me who is better…. pretty tough now isn’t it?

  27. i do agree with your comments Ronaldo played for different countries, Portugal England and spain it takes time for any player to adjust but he has dominated in all places scored 46 goal in 2011 and did not played many games due to injuries while messi has been in one place Barcelona since he was kid and played most games this season and scored 52 goals and barcelona his a build team while Real Madrid has a New coach and players that take some time until they adjust and shine.
Ronaldo is a very good and amazing player i would like to see Messi playing for other leagues and succeed he could prove how good he is.
Ronaldo Best has he proved in every single league.

  28. CR7 dominated the premier and is dominating la liga…he is captain of portugal and plays the same way as if he was on any of the other teams he has been on…messi on the other hand isn’t able to carry a team on his own he is just a great finisher but all his goals and triumph come from xavi and iniesta it’s so clearly shown whenever messi is on the field without both of them…maradona on the other hand was able to dominate and show class in which ever team he stepped in and single handily took argentina to world cup glory…if messi is so great why isn’t he able to do this…CR7 took portugal to 4th place in 2006 wc and round of 16 in 2010 in which he actually scored and helped his team to score messi isn’t the same or comparable to cr7 if cr were to have the best midfielders in the world giving him trhu passes all day long then he would have more goals then messi can ever have…if messi were to ever move to the premier league he will be eatin apart no doubt about it…as soon as barcelona players start to get traded we will see the true colors of “la pulga”

  29. everyone knows better whose the best player in the world,he is messi, the mood of messi the behavior of lional messi,is better then cristiano ronaldo, still i have never seen any fight of messi again any player in all of his matches in football game it shows he is honesty and his belive, the argentinain people should proud to have such a lovely player and the most smart enough player like maradona in their country there is no to break his record in football world am sure a bout him 100% may allah almight give him long life and become a real muslim and get success in his life caree

  30. @ Jake- Ronaldo was never a traditional winger at united. Unlike a winger, he rarely tracked back and would be given the freedom to roam, which allowed him to get into the goalscoring positions he did.. A traditional winger is someone like Giggs. A player who’s job it is to track back and stick in wide areas. Ronaldo, on the other hand, basically had a free role at united. As for most of his goals been through his own individual genius, that’s not true. The majority came in the box as they were supplied by his team mates. Yes, he did score some stunning free kicks and strikers but like at Madrid, he got great service from the players he had around him.

In regards to madrid, again that’s not true. Ronaldo has actually played up top the vast majority of this season- not in wide areas. And when he does play out wide, again he has virtually no defensive responsibilities and the license to move into different and more advanced positions. It’s often been highlighted that when he loses the ball, he rarely tries to win it back. If he played as a winger, that is something he would be required to do… So, as I say, he can not be called a winger.

    • @Him So right. Ronaldo was a winger during his teenage years, his very early United days. Once his scoring prowess was discovered, he was given a carte blance by Ferguson to play wherever he wanted. Same in Madrid. He maybe a left winger/right winger , whatever, on the lineup Mourinho hands to the press before the game. It doesn’t matter. Ronaldo moves anywhere he wants to. No reason in limiting his positioning and free-roaming.

  31. @nisha and willy, so right!

@Peter you are completely correct, and that proves my point Ronaldo is so good he is given a license to freely roam, because he is such a huge goal threat.

@Him If you watch Ronaldo now you will see he has now began to work back for the ball when he loses it, because thats what Jose Mourinho has instilled in him, the only time he doesnt do it is when he is left on his own up top.

Anyway my point still stands Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi comparison is still highly debatable, but you can see that messi has a huge advantage whilst ronaldo performs at the same level whatever team he is in.

  32. Disagree. At the Nou camp, there were a number of ocassions where he should absolutely no desire to win the ball and he wasn’t playing up top. The contrast between him and Messi’s workrate was highlighted by Sky Sports..

Also, how can you agree with what willy says, given that he is way off.. He says Ronaldo is as good for Portugal, as he is at club level.. That couldn’t be further from the truth. He went nearly two years without a goal and was way below par at the world cup. Whilst Messi was poor too, he was involved in many more goals than Ronaldo was for Portugal. Not to mention, that goal against an awful North Korea team was the luckiest you are likely to see. In the main, he’s been very poor for his country. Also, lets not forget Messi was playing in a less advanced role than Ronaldo. He was playing in a playmakers position for most of the time… Not to mention, Maradona’s tactics clearly didn’t help get the best out of him. However, since being under new management, he is shining for Argentina. He has scored against Spain, Portugal and Brazil and also assisted too.. Not to mention, there is more responsibility on his shoulders because everything goes through him. Unlike Ronaldo, he is expected to create and score, given his playmaking qualities- something Ronaldo can’t compare with. That added dimension to his game is yet another reason why he is the truly special player.

Also, willy says that Iniesta and Xavi provide everything for Messi but they only have eight assists between them this year..

Anyway, whilst there is no denying Ronaldo is a great player- it’s Messi who is a class apart. He’s a better dribbler, passer, has greater vision and is a far better team player. His ability to dribble past 4/5 defenders is what puts him on another level. It’s no coincidence he best dribblers are remembered as the best players ever and Messi is carrying on that tradition. He is already regarded as one of the best ever. Ronaldo will go down as a legend no doubt- but he is never talked about as possibly being remembered as the best ever because he has flaws in his game. One being that he is not a truly great dribbler or playmaker- it’s his ability as a goalscorer that has gained him the notoriety he has.. Obviously that does apply to Messi to a degree but his ability to create is just as important as his goals.

  33. Messi is always moving the ball down the pitch. When he loses the ball, which is rare, he fights to get it back. He never dives, and is not prone to fighting his opponents, ever.

Ronaldo is great, there is no doubt about that, but he does not move the ball down the pitch with the same grace as Messi. When cornered he must often reach deep into his enormous bag of tricks to fool the defenders and try to get by them. Messi on the other hand manages to move the ball through two or three defenders with grace, speed, and without needing to use convoluted tricks.

People are criticizing Messi and saying that without Iniesta or Xavi he would not be the striker he is today. That is simply ridiculous. Messi has almost 30 assists this season, it seems to me that he is not only a great striker, but he also creates more scoring opportunities than probably any other great striker in history. How many famous players, Pele, Maradona, Brazilian Ronaldo, CR7, Ronaldinho, etc. How many of them do you know that have managed to not only set scoring records, but also outpace everyone else in assists?

  34. well i luv real and i dnt enjoy people talking shit bout real esp yall barca fans not cool iseriosly dont want to sae fuck u but u r gonna force me

  35. @Jake, manu didn’t win those 3 titles because of Ronaldo, it was despite him. Also, remember how Ronaldo was when he first got to Manu. He was shit. Diving all over the place and cheating. Fits right in at Real actually now and Manu are much better without him. I also can’t believe there is even a messi v Ronaldo argument. Ronaldo isn’t even in the same league, R7 goes missing in every big game, always has, and that’s from a Liverpool fan!!
