It took a wonderful goal by Vincent Kompany for Manchester City, with all its money and talent, to overcome a stubborn and dangerous Leicester side. The defending champions are now one win away against Brighton from claiming the 2019 Premier League title.
Once again playing with the knowledge that dropping points means Liverpool remain at the top, Pep Guardiola’s players did press and flow, but found it difficult against an organized and smart Leicester team, playing fun and efficient football since the arrival of Brendan Rodgers.
One magical save by Kasper Schmeichel, followed by goal line footage showing how close it was to goal, signaled it might be a night that ends up with Liverpool fans feeling happy, confident about the season finale.
But Kompany, who along with Sergio Aguero is the face (albeit the less expensive of the bunch) of City’s evolution into England’s best side, was there in the 70th minute, unexpectedly, yet brilliantly.
Leicester played like they have something to prove, and not much later Iheanacho found himself with a terrific opportunity to stun the Etihad. However, his ball went wide, and Leicester didn’t test an anxious Manchester City side again.
It all comes down to the final Sunday – Liverpool hosting Wolves, needing a victory, and hoping for Manchester City to fall (Draw or Lose) at Brighton. After the non-existent of a challenge last season, everyone’s relishing a dramatic finish for 2019, regardless of the end result.
