So it is official now, Jose Mourinho is officially the new boss of the Tottenham Hotspur. The Portuguese manager and the Spurs reached an agreement early this morning, according to UK time.
The contract is signed through the end of the 2023 season, and it appears that Mourinho’s appointment is not a temporary solution for Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy. The Special One was the No.1 contender for this job even while Mauricio Pochettino was still in charge.
Back then, Mourinho was involved in all the speculations and predictions regarding Tottenham’s future. It might seem that the management of the North London club had something arranged with him in advance. It is the only way of explaining such a fast reaction and his appointment less than 11 hours since Pochettino’s departure.
The Argentinian was with the Spurs for the last five years, evolving this club from an average Premier League team into a continental powerhouse. Unfortunately, he couldn’t win any trophies and has two lost finals. One in the Football League Cup, and the last year’s Champions League title match.
In the meantime, Tottenham finished twice as the third-placed in the Premiership and as runners-up in 2016, behind Leicester City.
Recent results, and several poor performances increased the tensions inside the locker room. According to sources from the English media, the relationship between the players and the manager was pretty bad.
Meanwhile, after his departure from Man United, Mourinho was working as a commentator and analyst, not wanting to get away from England. He had several offers this summer, like the one from Inter Milan, but the two-time European champion chose to stay and wait for another chance to lead one Premiership side.
During his time with the Blues, he won three Premierships, three EFL Cups, two FA Cups, and one FA Cup. The Portuguese’s records with United weren’t that shiny, and he had just three trophies, one of the UEFA Europa League in 2017.
Mourinho will make his first appearance as the Spurs boss this Saturday in the opening match of Week 13, when Tottenham meets West Ham United on the road.
