Jose Mourinho couldn’t wish for a better start at Tottenham. The Special One and the Spurs triumphed against West Ham 3-2, snapping the streak of bad results the team from North London posted in the recent weeks.
It was the first Premiership win for Tottenham after five consecutive failures. But what was more important, the Spurs were looking much better as a team. Apart from the last 20 minutes, the Champions League runners-up controlled the game, dictated the tempo, and were pretty confident.
Tottenham’s Strikers Clinical
They broke West Ham’s lock in the late part of the opening half, with Son scoring in the 36th minute. The South Korean sent a perfectly aimed shot from left, inside the box, posting the first goal in Mourinho’s era.
The fans at the London Stadium didn’t wait for too long to see another score. Son found Lucas Moura on the far post with a perfect cross, and the Brazilian managed to double the lead. He reached the ball before one of West Ham’s defenders, igniting Tottenham’s fans. It was the 43rd minute of this clash.
Tottenham came flying into the second half, and they increased the lead through Harry Kane, three minutes after the whistle. Spurs’ captain beat Roberto for the third time, with a header after Serge Aurier’s cross. The guests sat back and waited for a chance to hit on a break, but they didn’t have any notable opportunities until the end.
West Ham’s Late Push Not Enough
Meanwhile, West Ham scored twice. Marc Antonio netted the first in the 72nd minute. The goal came following his nice shot just inside the box. Angelo Ogbona made it 3-2 in the sixth minute of the stoppage time.
The Spurs won away from home in the EPL for the first time since January. They are now awaiting the Greek powerhouse, Olympiacos in the Champions League this Tuesday. After that, they host Bournemouth.
As for West Ham, things are not looking bright at all. The Hammers haven’t won for eight games counting all competitions. Their boss Mauricio Pellegrini is under massive pressure, and he might be fired anytime soon. West Ham plays with Chelsea in the next Premiership round.
