Near Blasphemy. I’m sure that is what many Kiwis feel about England planning to don an All-Black jersey in their opener, on September 10, playing against Argentina. The English explained their decision by the fact that they cannot wear their traditional white against the Pumas who will be playing with White and Blue. Jonah Lomu, an All-Black rugby union legend as big as they come, thinks the RFU should have gone with a different color.

For Me, you are just disrespecting the legacy of past players. I will find it difficult to watch England in a different shirt. I am one of those who was brought up on the history of Rugby. I will find it pretty weird to look across the paddock and see them running not wearing that famous white uniform. 

Jonah Lomu played for the All-Blacks in two World Cups (1995, 1999), scoring 15 tries, still the record for World Cup tries. Despite becoming the first “superstar” of Rugby Union during those years, Lomu failed to lead New Zealand all the way, leaving their 1987 win in the inaugural World Cup (also held in New Zealand) as their only title. Very disappointing for the nation constantly heading in to the tournament as favorites.

Lomu feels that the All-Blacks’ players shouldn’t and won’t be distracted by the potential controversy caused by the English – It is theirs to lose (referring to All-Blacks players)… It is on their home ground, and they will have the support around them. That is a huge advantage, but the players still need to get it done. 

The All-Blacks begin their Tri-Nations campaign this weekend, playing against a depleted South Africa side who have already lost their opener in Australia.
