Bundesliga Day 1 Round Up

Finally, we got our favorite sport back. Finally, a weekend where I can sit in front of the television from noon till late in the evening and watch my European football. The day began with the Milan Derby, in China of all places, and continued with the first day of the Bundesliga, following the season opener yesterday as Dortmund beat Hamburg, kicking off from where they left off last season.

Dortmund 3 Hamburg 1

The champions blitzed the visitors from Hamburg, opening the scoring in the 17th minute through Kevin Grosskreutz. Twelve minutes later it was the fantastic Mario Gotze who doubled the lead and Grosskreutz finished off the match three minutes into the second half. Robert Tesche scored Hamburg’s only goal. Jurgen Klopp’s lads look sharp and ready for another run at the title.

Hannover 2 Hoffenheim 1

Hannover had a fantastic seasons last year, finishing fourth. They began 2011-2012 the same way things ended last year. Jan Schlaudraff opened, Seljad Salihovic equalized for the visitors. Norwegian/Morrocan striker Mohammed Abdellaoue scored the winner early on through a penalty in the 30th minute.

Stuttgart 3 Schalke 0

Both teams were probably the two most disappointing sides last season along with Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen. Schalke, with the strike force of Raul and Huntelaar crashed miserably in their opener. Goals from Cacau, Martin Harnik and Shinji Okazaki gave Bruno Labbadia a very happy opening day.

FC Koln 0 Wolfsburg 3

The 2009 champions fell a long way since then. Felix Magath, back after his Schalke experience, will try and set the ship back on course. A brace from Patrick Helmes and a third from Marcel Schafer gave Die Wolves the most impressive win of the opening day.

Augsburg 2 Freiburg 2

Augsburg opened their first Bundesliga season with a respectable draw against the team that finished 9th last season. Freiburg led twice through the very talented Papiss Cisse and later on from Cedric Makiadi. Sascha Molders scored the first goals for the hosts in the beginning of their road to survival.

Werder Bremen 2 Kaiserslautern 0

Swedish striker made a very happy starting day to 2011-2012, scoring twice for Bremen, starting another season under Thomas Schaaf.
