The Spanish La Liga opened, finally, this weekend. It’s going to be a two horse raise, as usual, between the champions for the last three seasons, Barcelona, and Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid. Both teams’ opening matches were a festival of goals and weak opposition, also foreshadowing the pichichi firing shot, with Both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo starting strong.

Cristiano Ronaldo fired home three goals, making it an incredible 90 goals in 92 matches since joining Real. He won the Pichichi last season with 40 league goals, a new La Liga record. Too easy? Yeah it was too easy. Real bombarded their hosts, attempting 39 shots at goal. Kaka, Marcelo and Xabi Alonso scored the other three, with relative ease. For now, despite what the Super Cup had to say about everything, Real Madrid have the super early lead in the title race.

It wasn’t much different at the Nou Camp for Barcelona, hosting Villareal. A Champions League side mind you, not a lowly team. Still, the huge gaps in quality and financial ability were too obvious, maybe even widening since last season.

It was classic Barcelona, with a refreshing touch. Thiago got a surprising start, and immediately showed what he can do. He scored the opening goal as a pathetic Villareal defense didn’t do much to bother him. Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas scored their first league goals for their new side (I wonder if Cesc was feeling for Arsenal) and Messi, well, couldn’t himself and grabbed a season opening brace. Since Guardiola’s arrival Messi has scored 144 goals in 163 matches.
