One ‘Game of the Century’ is enough in a season. LSU and Alabama did their best not to win one of the more highly anticipated College Football games in recent years, but the no.1 Tigers scored their overtime field goal, while the soon no longer no.2 Alabama missed four during the game.

They might be the second best team in the nation. Hell, maybe the best, but they had their shot at LSU. I hope the formula doesn’t pit them against each other for the National Championship as well. It’s hard to see Les Miles’ Tigers not reaching that game.

With 120 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision, some of them never ever about to meet in any sort of way, this should be a NATIONAL championship game, not an SEC grudge match as the conference everyone knows is the best crowns it’s champions through inner battles. LSU could still fall in the Conference Championship game against Georgia, or even more likely, their game against Arkansas. But that probably won’t happen.

So give the title shot to someone else. The way the BCS works, or at least makes us believe it works, is that once you get your shot at the number one spot and lose, move over for another contender. Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Boise State. They’re next in the picking order, and deserve to be in the national championship game more than Alabama, just for the sake of this being somewhat of a true National final of American College Football.

What about the Cougars from Houston? Dream on. Any team they might face, LSU should be able to continue the 5 year title-streak the SEC has got going. I mean, the not scoring any touchdowns on a ‘Game of the Century?’ They’re the first since the Army-Navy showdown in 0-0 to ‘accomplish’, but only because the two best defenses in the land went head to head. Only because mistake came after mistake, with that goal line interception by Jarrett Lee being the biggest of them by Alabama.

Les Miles got another one, very late, on Nick Saban, as over 100,000 fans, mostly in Crimson, stood stunned, in silence, as LSU players celebrated, knowing their toughest test on the road to LSU’s first national title since 2007 is past them. Alabama, unless unexpected losses come to certain teams, are out of the race, or at least should be.
