Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh are the first pair of brothers to serve as NFL head coaches in the league’s history. Jim, in his debut season as an NFL head coach, led the San Francisco 49ers to a 13-3 record and needs to beat the Giants to reach the Super Bowl. John has led the Baltimore Ravens to the post season for a fourth consecutive time and his second AFC championship game.

Chances of both of them reaching the Super Bowl? Both are underdogs, the way I see it, in the conference championship games, but not by much. Jim, who coached Stanford in the previous seasons, led the 49ers to their first postseason performance in nine years but more importantly, built on their constantly improving defense to make Alex Smith, for the first time, a respectable and confident NFL quarterback.

For John Harbuagh, who was never the players his younger brother was (nine months age difference) and his playing career remained an amateurish one, it’s been him and Joe Flacco, another highly criticized quarterback from day 1. Both started their Baltimore Ravens career in 2008, making the playoffs in each season with a regular season record 44-20. Flacco wins, just not in the postseason, or not enough. Like Smith, he has an excellent defense behind him.

So will we have a Super Baugh? Hard to say. Lets say the Ravens have a 30% shot of winning, the 49ers more around 40%. Easy statistics say that’s a 12% chance of us getting a brother-derby in the biggest sport event in American sport. It would be nice, but I don’t see it happening this year.
