The Miami Heat weren’t even around in the 1970’s, with the franchise being founded in 1988 and to this day, probably the most successful of the late 80’s expansion teams, which also included the Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Dwyane Wade, along with Udonis Haslem, are the only Heat players still playing with the team to be part of the 2006 title winning side. A few disappointing years changed with LeBron James and Chris Bosh’s arrival. Not only did the Heat become instant favorites to win the NBA title, but also a marquee team of the league in terms of interest, ratings and sales.
The NBA in the 1970’s? Julius Erving began his professional basketball career as an ABA player, but the ABA was a big part of basketball in the 70’s before swallowed up by the superior league. The retro Heat jerseys from the pictures below are so ABA, with Mike Miller getting the Will Ferrell Semi-Pro treatment.
