Sebastien Chabal, the 34 year old former French international may be taking his talents to Australia and be a part of the up and coming 2012 Super Rugby season, after a fallout between him and his Racing Metro coach Pierre Berbizier regarding his new contract led the Chabal leaving the club.

Chabal was probably the highest paid Rugby Union player in the world, with a €1 million per year salary since 2009, when he signed for the newly promoted Parisian side, beginning its way in the French Top 14.

This isn’t Chabal’s first foreign experience, as he spent 2004-2009 with Sale Sharks of the Aviva Premiership, where he made the switch from flanker to the No. 8 position. Chabal won the Premiership with Sale in 2006. He was recently courted by the Australian Rugby League side, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, but the negotiations regarding the code switch didn’t not turn out to be fruitful ones.

As for Chabal’s next destination, he has created enough interest in Europe. Both Wasps and Harlequins from England and Stade Francais have shown interest, but Chabal confirmed during an interview with the French TV that he’s heading down under – I’m going to play in Australia soon.

Where? The Melbourne Rebels or the Brumbies look like likely destinations, with a need in the back of a scrum for a player like Chabal. The Rebels, however, via Twitter, have announced that they will not be pursuing the 62 time French international.

If Chabal does eventually join one of the Australian outfits, he will be the second Frenchman currently playing for a Super Rugby team, with Frederic Michalak, another player who was not part of the 2011 Rugby Union World Cup finalists side, playing his rugby in South Africa for the Natal Sharks.
