Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho Used to Like Each Other

Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are rivals. They probably don’t like each other that much as well. Although a lot of the media banter is part of an act. Part of mind games and part of media personalities, some truths of dislike do seep out in their words when the two exchange banter over the TV Cameras. But it wasn’t always like that.

Once upon a time, Jose Mourinho was actually a Barcelona employee. First under Bobby Robson and later under Louis Van Gaal, Mourinho spent four seasons in Barcelona, beginning as mostly a translator and finishing as a very influential assistant manager, needing more space and responsibilities to show his worth, which he later got when he returned to Portugal for the head coach job at Benfica. You know the rest.

Guardiola was one of Barcelona’s most important players when Jose Mourinho came along, one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. During Robson’s only year, most of what people remember is related to Ronaldo and his breakout season. Although they didn’t win the league title that year, Barcelona did win the Cup Winners’ Cup. From the video, it seems that Pep and Mourinho liked each other very much, once upon a time.
