Tony Parker for MVP? Unlikely, because Kevin Durant and LeBron James seem to be the more popular choices for the top individual award in the regular season. But San Antonio Spurs fans look at things a little differently, and one of them even gets a Tony Parker haircut, in appreciation of the All-Star point guard.
Parker led the Spurs in scoring this season, averaging 18.3 points, while posting a career high in assists per game with 7.7. The weight on his shoulders and legs seems to grow each in year, as the role of Spurs leader shifts more and more to him because of the aging Duncan and Ginobili, not to mention Ginobili’s injuries this season.
In the playoffs against the Utah Jazz things have been very different. The Spurs swept through Utah as expected, now waiting for the winner between the Grizzlies and the Clippers. Parker is doing even better in the postseason so far, especially with the Jazz’ problems in the back court, averaging 21 points and 6.8 assists per game.
MVP always gets twisted and changed in order to fit the player that the writer wants to be elected. Best player overall, most important to his team or best player on the best team. I don’t think Parker falls into the first two options but arguably the Spurs do look like the best team right now in the league.
Getting a hair cut that makes your head resemble Tony Parker’s face won’t get him the award. It won’t even get him into the All-NBA first team. But I’m pretty sure he’ll be smiling about it home when he sees it. That’s gotta count for something.
