Chelsea keep on cultivating their Belgian colony at Stamford Bridge. The latest catch? Charly Musonda, a 16 year old ‘wonderkid’ who people in Belgium often compare as the next Eden Hazard, now also a Chelsea player, although Hazard is barely out of his teenage years.

The young Musonda is named after his father, Charles Musonda, a Zambian footballer who player with Club Brugge and Anderlecht during the late 80’s and 1990’s. Musonda was part of the Zambian national team that almost made the 1994 World Cup, but he wasn’t on the plane that crashed off the coast of Gabon, killing all 30 people on board.

Chelsea took advantage of the fact that in Belgium, footballers can’t sign a professional contract before the age of 16 and got their hands on the very talented 15 year old, transferring him, along with his two brothers, Lamisha and Tyka, from Anderlecht to Chelsea. The move happened nearly two weeks ago, and the Belgian champions’ chiefs are fuming over the alleged ‘poaching’ by Chelsea.

Chairman Roger Vanden – I’m very disappointed. We agreed with Charly’s father he would stay with us a few more years. Chelsea know Belgian clubs can’t give players contracts until they are 16. We’re going to try to get some serious compensation from them.

According to Anderlecht, Chelsea agreed to make a substantial financial compensation, but the club has yet to receive any money for the family move.

The Musonda family joins a host of Belgian players currently with Chelsea or loaned out – Romeulu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Thibuat Courtois and Kevin De Byrne. Musonda was chased by Arsenal, Manchester City and Barcelona. It’s safe to assume that the Chelsea offer the father received, which pretty much takes care of the whole family,  was better than the rest.
