When Florentino Perez spent his money this summer on Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka and Benzema and more, he thought about re-capturing the La Liga title, but his real target is winning the Champions League title, which has eluded Real Madrid since 2002, a life time in Real’s eyes. So an impressive five goals in Zurich was a good way to start, despite the defence putting some worries in Pellegrini’s mind. Real lead was 3-0 at half time, with Ronaldo scoring a brilliant free kick and Raul and Higuain easily scoring from inside the area.

The short period of trouble came about an hour from the start, with Zurich winning a bogus penalty kick and Xavier Margairaz converting it. Two minutes later it was Silvan Aegerter who made it 3-2. Real held on to their lead until the 89th minute, when Zurich’s goalkeeper, Johnny Leoni, made a bad stop to Ronaldo’s free kick, ensuring the win for Real. Guti put the final stamp on the victory, scoring in injury time.
