This year, Roman Abramovich is keeping his wallet open for the Chelsea manager to make use of. The next big thing? Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior, Oscar in short, the 20 year old Brazilian midfielder from Internacional who will also be part of the Brazilian setup in London this summer.
Oscar, already capped six times by the national team and made a real impression on European scouts one year ago at the FIFA U-20 world cup, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Portugal, which is only the second time a player scored three goals in any kind of World Cup final, seniors or juniors.
The great thing for Chelsea about signing Oscar wasn’t just getting another attack-oriented midfielder, something Abramovich put a real emphasis on before the transfer window (already getting Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and chasing more players), is snatching Oscar away from Tottenham and Andre Villas-Boas who seemed closer to signing the player about 24 hours ago.
The deal is estimated to be worth £25 with the agent’s fee and all other side-expenditures, taking Chelsea’s transfer spending this summer to £63.5 million. From what we hear, it’s not over yet, as Hulk might still be an option, although possibly too expensive, and Andre Schürrle from Leverkusen is also chased, with the German club turning down a £17 million offer over the weekend.
Oscar has scored 19 goals in 64 matches, adding 20 assists during the last 18 months for Internacional, winning the Campeonato Gaucho twice and the Recopa Sudamericana. He began his career with Sao Paulo before moving on to Porto Alegre in 2010.
