With the race for Oscar looking pretty much over, Manchester United turn their attention to another young Brazilian midfielder, 19-year oldĀ Lucas Rodrigues Moura da SilvaĀ or simply Lucas, who has played his club football since the age of 17 for Sao Paulo.
The expected price? AroundĀ Ā£30 million. United aren’t the only club chasing the player who has already been capped 15 times for the national side and will appear alongside Oscar in the 2012 London Olympics, trying to lead Brazil to their first ever gold medal in the Olympic games football tournament, asĀ strangeĀ as that sounds.
Manchester United have already sent a delegation to Brazil, hoping to wrap the deal up before anyone else gets their hands on another ‘wonderkid’. Chelsea were also interested in the player, although now that they’ve pretty much landed Oscar, it’s safe to assume that they’re out of the race for the player who can be utilized as both attacking midfielder and as a winger. Inter have been busy so far this summer, adding Fredy Guarin, Rodrigo Palacio, Matias Silvestra and Samir Handanovic.
Manchester Untied have added Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell. After last season, Alex Ferguson is keen on adding more than just depth to his club in another title challenge against Manchester City and probably Chelsea. His main goal is adding something to a somewhat stagnant and boring midfield, that may have cost United the title when it came down to it, especially in the two direct clashes with their City rivals.
However, Ferguson was thought to be going in the same direction after losing to Barcelona in the Champions League final. Attractive, creative and attacking football. Not too much of it actually showed during long stretches of United’s season in 2011-2012, although it didn’t stop them from getting as close as possible to winning a second consecutive Premier League title.
Lucas himself seems to be enjoying the attention –Ā When I go on the Internet I see Inter, Real Madrid and I don’t know who else, wanting to come for me with a truck load of money. Of course I think about it, but I can’t let it go to my head.
The talented youngster hasn’t won any titles with his club in Brazil, instead earning quite a few individual awards after his breakout 2011 season. In 103 matches for the club since making his debut in the 2010 season, Lucas has played in 103 matches, scoring 26 goals and adding 19 assists.
