It seems that Leonardo is persistent and stubborn regarding making Paris Saint-Germain a member of Europe’s elite clubs, hoping that the dual attempt of signing Zlatan Ibrahimoic and Thiago Silva from AC Milan will come through this time, without any vetoes from the AC Milan president.
PSG were on the verge of signing the Brazilian centre back for €47 million, already agreeing on the personal terms with Thiago Silva and his agent, but Silvio Berlusconi shot down the deal at the final hour, instead extending the contract of Silva, who has been with the Rossoneri since 2009 and will be part of the Brazilian squad in the 2012 Olympics.
For Zlatan Ibrahimovic it’s a new day and world, being approached by a team from Ligue 1, one of the few leagues he hasn’t won a title in. Ibrahimovic has been with AC Milan for the last couple of years, winning the league title in 2010 and scoring 56 goals in 85 matches for the side since arriving from Barcelona.
This time, PSG decided to first agree on a fee with the Italian club before moving on to the players. After offering €65 million for both players, they got the go ahead from Milan strong-man Adriano Galliani. Now all that’s left is for Ibrahimovic’s agent to convince the 30 year old striker that a move to PSG is good for his career, not just his bank account. Milan are already planning on signing Carlos Tevez as a partial replacement for Ibra, who is the best striker in the world in my opinion.
Milan have made one big move so far this summer, signing Italian international midfielder Ricardo Montolivo from Fiorentina on a free transfer while letting go of a host of veterans – Nesta, Van Bommel, Inzaghi, Gattuso and Seedorf, while they had to see Alberto Aquilani return to Liverpool after his loan deal ended.
PSG have been rather busy in the transfer market since the takeover by the Qatar Investment Authority, which has turned them into one of the biggest spenders in world football if not the biggest. They spent €108 million last season in an attempt to bring a league title to Paris for the first time since 1994, but finished a close second behind Montpellier.
This season, with both the league and the Champions League in mind, there’s no slowing down in the expenditure process, with Ezequiel Lavezzi signed from Napoli. Adding Ibrahimovic and Silva into the mix, French team or not, will immediately make them into one of the more formidable sides in Europe.
