Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez? Won’t Work According to Holmes

Who will be the New York Jets’ starting quarterback? The official announcement says Mark Sanchez, and early training camp looks say the same. But that does not mean Tim Tebow won’t be getting any snaps, maybe even in each game. According to Santonio Holmes, the dual quarterback plan isn’t going to work.

Being a quarterback has a lot to do with ego, and something that might work in College won’t work in the pros. It’s bad enough for one of the quarterbacks to have to sit behind a guy he’s sure he’s better than. But trading snaps sounds like a plan with a bad ending. A little bit of competition doesn’t hurt, but too much ego and frustration is bound to get in the way.

It’s also about the teammates around them, which Holmes believes will find it hard to adjust to two different systems and rhythms – I don’t think so because you have to allow one quarterback to get into the rhythm of a game, and it starts from the preparation in practice.

Knowing the first couple of plays that he’s going to take these reps, it’s getting the feel for coming onto the field with the crowd awaiting you, it’s the making the mistakes early in the game to finishing the games at the end. You don’t just change a guy out just because he has a few mistakes early into a game. So I think coming into this season, that we have a lot to expect from Sanchez.

That doesn’t mean Holmes doesn’t believe Tebow can hold his own on the playing field – Tebow is going to have plays where he comes in and plays. I’m pretty sure he’s going to get them done, and he’s going to do his job just as well as any other quarterback would when they get an opportunity to get on the field.

Holmes, a Super Bowl MVP with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is coming off the worst season of his career with the Jets, catching only 51 passes for 654 yards, while catching a career high 8 touchdown passes. Tebow came after a breakthrough season with the Denver Broncos that showed his skills as a game changer but also his problems as a pocket passer. The arrival of Peyton Manning signaled the end of his short era as a starter with the Broncos.
