2012 Olympic Games Day 1 – Event Finals Previews & Predictions


After the fantastic opening ceremony and two days of football, the 2012 Summer Olympics in London can officially begin. Saturday gives us the first opportunity to look at gold medal winners in Archery, Cycling, Judo, Weightlifting, Fencing and Shooting, but the big event will be Michael Phelps vs Ryan Lochte in the 400 IM, one of four finals in the pool on the first day.

Archery Men’s Team Competition

A day that beings at 9:00 local time to complete the round of 16, with the quarter finals beginning at 15:00, the semifinals at 16:40 and the finals at 17:31. South Korea have already set a world record on the first day of shooting arrows in the 216 arrow ranking round with 2087 points. South Korea are also the Gold Medal winners from 2008, with Im Dong-Hyun remaining from the gold medal winning side.

Cycling Men’s Road Race

145 Cyclists will set of at 10:00 from The Mall to cross the River Thames at Putney Bridge and then through Richmond Park, Bushy Park and past Hampton Court Palace before undertaking nine loops of a circuit over Box Hill, after which the riders head back to The Mall for the finish. The favorite to win the gold medal is British rider Mark Cavendish, although a lot depends on a sprint finish. Tom Boonen, Matthew Goss and Andre Greipel are also considered among the favorites to win. The gold medalist from Beijing, Samuel Sanchez, will not compete.

Fencing – Women’s Individual Foil

The round of 32 will commence at 09:00, carrying on until the final. Five time gold medal winner, Italian Valentina Vezzali, is the favorite to win the event for the fourth straight time.

Judo – Men’s 60 KG and Women’s 48 KG

The qualifications in the men’s side of the competition begin at 09:30 with the final scheduled to be at 16:10. Rishod Sobirov of Uzbekistan, Bronze medalist from Beijing and the current world champion is the favorite to win the gold medal. Tomoko Fukumi from Japan, silver medalist at the 2011 World championships, is the favorite to win gold among the women.

Shooting – Women’s 10 meters air rifle, Men’s 10 meters air pistol

Swimming – 4 Finals

The semifinals begin at 19:30 local time, with the Men’s 400 meters individual medley and the war in the water between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte kicking off. It’ll be followed by the 400 meter freestyle for men, with South Korean world champion Park Tae-Hwan as the favorite. Next up is the Women’s 400 IM, which will probably be a battle between Australian Stephanie Rice and American Elizabeth Beisel. The last final of the day will be for the Women’s 4×100 freestyle, with the Dutch hoping to upset the Americans once again like in the World Championships.

Weightlifting – Women’s 48 kilograms, 15:30
