Dana Vollmer set a new world record, one of two on the day in the pool, winning the 100 meters butterfly competition, while France and South Africa took gold in the pool as well with the French overtaking Ryan Lochte and the United States in the final meters of the relay race, while China had another good day with gold medals in diving (as always) and shooting and Marianne Voss of the Netherlands won the most dramatic gold of the day in the Women’s road race.

Archery, Women’s Team

The South Korean trio and favorites of Lee Sung-Jin, Ki Bo-Bae, Choi Hyeonju took gold, beating China 210-209 in a nervy final. China took silver (obviously) while Japan beat Russia 209-208 to complete an Asian medal sweep.

Cycling, Women’s Road Race

Marianne Voss of the Netherlands, a five time silver medalist in the world championships road race and gold medalist from the 2006 World’s, needed 3:35.29 hours to win her first Olympic gold medal, coming ahead by a nose infront of Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead, winning Silver and Great Britain’s first medal of the Olympic games. Olga Zabelinskaya of Russia took the Bronze medal.

Diving, Women’s synchronized 3 meter springboard

No surprises as the Chinese duo of He Zi and the queen of the sport, Wu Minxia, winning her third Olympic gold medal with a score total of 346.20. The American duo of Kelci Bryant and Abigail Johnston took Silver (321.90) with Canada taking the Bronze medal.

Fencing, Men’s Sabre

Hungarian Aron Szilagy surprised and stunned the field by winning his first ever Olympic medal at the age of 22, beating Italian Diego Occhiuzzi, winning his second Olympic medal, 15-8 in the final. Russian Nikolay Kovalev won the battle for Bronze, winning his first ever Olympic medal.

Judo, Women’s 52 KG and Men’s 66 KG

An Kum Ae of North Korea added a gold Medal to her Silver medal from the same weight (52 Kilograms) from Beijing, beating Cuban Yanet Bermoy, taking her second consecutive silver medal after losing in the final of the 48 kilograms competiton in Beijing. Rosalba Forciniti of Italy and Priscilla Gneto of France took the Bronze medals.

In the Men’s 66 kilograms,20 year-old Lasha Shavdatuashvili of Georgia took home gold after beating the veteran Hungarian Miklós Ungvári, who at the age of 32, with a rich career and plenty World’s and European championships medals, won his first Olympic medal (silver). Masashi Ebinuma of Japan, the world champion, and Cho Jun-Ho of South Korea took the Bronze medals.

Shooting

Women’s 10 meters air pistol – Guo Wenjon of China won the gold medal for the second consecutive time, followed by Celine Goberville of France with silver and Olena Kostevych of Ukraine with bronze, her second Olympic medal after winning gold in 2004. Women’s Skeet – Kim Rhode of the United States won her third Olympic gold medal and her first in Skeet, followed by Wei Ning of China with silver, her second silver Olympic medal, and Danka Barteková of Slovakia with bronze.

Swimming

Women’s 100 meters butterfly – Dana Vollmer of the United States set a new World record (55.98) while winning her second Olympic gold medal and her first in London, coming ahead of China’s Lu Ying (56.87, silver) and Alicia Coutts of Australia, with bronze and a time of 56.94.

Men’s 100 meters breaststroke – Another world record in a fruitful day, as South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh, won his first Olympic medal with a time 58.46. Christian Sprenger of Australia came in second for Silver with 58.93 and American Brendan Hansen came up with Bronze for the second time in his Olympic career and his fifth medal overall.

Women’s 400 meters freestyle – Camille Muffat of France, a 22 year-old, won her first Olympic gold medal by setting an Olympic record, finishing the 400 meters with a time of 4:01.45. Allison Schmitt won her third Olympic medal and her first ever silver, setting a new  national record with 4:01.77. British Rebecca Adlington, the gold medalist in this event from Beijing, finished third, taking home the bronze.

Men’s 4×100 meters freestyle relay – France took gold with an incredible revenge race, falling behind the United States for most of the race as Michael Phelps and Nathan Adrian built a big enough lead, but Ryan Lochte’s fantastic turn off the wall wasn’t enough to keep Yannick Angel from catching up and snatching the first place. United States, with Lochte and Phelps, take silver while Russia took bronze.

Weightlifting – Women’s 53 KG and Men’s 56 KG

World Champion Zulfiya Chinshanlo from Kazakhstan, weighting at 52.7 kilograms, won her first Olympic gold medal with a total of 226, followed by Hsu Shu-ching of Chinese Taipei with silver and Cristina Iovu of Moldova with bronze.

Om-Yun Chol of North Korea took gold, coming ahead of Wu Jingbiao of China (silver) and Valentin Hristov of Azerbaijan (bronze) in the men’s 56 kilograms competition.
