Day 8 of the 2012 Olympic games is the last in the swimming pool, Michael Phelps’ final appearance in an Olympic swimming pool, while the action heats up on the track, with Carmelita Jeter and Veronica Campbell-Brown going for the Women’s 100 meters title, and Maria Sharapova faces Serena Williams for gold on the tennis court.

Athletics

Women’s heptathlon – Jessica Ennis of Great Britain is currently in the lead, and the 2009 world champion and the 2011 silver medalist is the favorite to come away with the gold, followed by Hyleas Fountain of the United States, the silver medalist from Beijing, is right behind them.

Men’s 20 kilometers walk, final at 17:00

Women’s discus throw – The favorite to win will probably be Yarelys Barrios from Cuba, who finished second in the world championships, with Nadine Muller of Germany and Li Yanfeng of China are also in the running for the medals.

Men’s Long Jump – Irving Salandino is the Olympic champion, but it’s hard believing he’ll win the title. Mitchell Watt of Australia is a good bet for one of the medals, but this field is way too open to predict.

Men’s 10,000 meters – Mo Farah is the favorite, but he finished in second place in the world championships, so a huge disappointment in front of the British fans isn’t out of the question.

Women’s 100 meters – Carmelita Jeter of the United States is the world champion and also finished with the best time in the heats, and it’s going to come down between her and Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown.

Badminton – Women’s singles at 14:15 and Women’s doubles at 15:45.

Cycling – Women’s team pursuit

Hard to see anyone but Great Britain taking gold, finishing nearly four seconds faster than the United States in the qualification.

Fencing – Women’s team epee

Romania are the number ranked team in the competition, but nothing really happens this time according to the rankings. Italy and Russia are also in the running.

Gymnastics – Women’s Trampoline at 15:26

Rowing

Men’s coxless four – A race between Great Britain and Australia for gold.

Women’s lightweight double sculls – Seems like an easy gold for Great Britain, with Greece, China and Germany.

Men’s lightweight double sculls – A battle between Denmark and Great Britain, the world champions and gold medalists from Beijing.

Women’s single sculls – Miroslava Knapková of the Czech Republic, the world champion, is the favorite to take gold.

Shooting – Women’s 50 meters rifle three positions at 12:45 and Women’s trap at 15:00.

Swimming

Women’s 50 meters freestyle – At the moment, hard to see anyone but Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands, who won the 100 meters freestyle, winning gold.

Men’s 1500 meters freestyle – Sun Yang of China, who won gold in the 400 meters and silver in the 200 meters, is the obvious favorite to win gold, being the world champion and the fastest man in the heats by far.

Women’s 4×100 meters medley relay – Japan, United States, China and Australia fighting for gold.

Men’s 4×100 meters medley relay – Michael Phelps’ final appearance in an Olympic final (probably), and it’s hard to see anyone but the Americans taking gold here.

Tennis

Women’s singles – A huge battle between the recent Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams, the slight favorite, against the recent French Open champion, Maria Sharapova.

Men’s doubles – As expected, the Bryan brothers against the French duo of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Michael Llodra.

Triathlon – Women’s at 09:00

Weightlifting – Men’s 94 kilograms final at 15:30
