2012 Olympic Games Day 9 – Event Finals Previews & Predictions


There are plenty of big events and finals on day 9 of the London 2012 Summer Olympics, but none will be bigger than the men’s 100 meters final, with Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake projected to battle for the top spot and who knows, maybe a new world record. Earlier, Roger Federer will try and win his first individual gold medal, facing Andy Murray, with two gold medal matches one after the other.

Athletics

Men’s 100 meters – Only two athletes ran below 10 seconds in the heats – Ryan Bailey and Justin Gatlin of the United States. Usain Bolt ran a 10.08 while Yohan Blake, the world champion, ran a 10.00. Final at 21:50.

Men’s 3000 meters steeplechase – Anyone other than Kenya’s Ezekiel Kemobi, the world champion and Athens gold medalist, or Brimin Kipruto, the Beijing gold medalist, winning the race would be a huge shock. Final at 21:25.

Men’s Hammer Throw – European champion, Krisztian Pars of Hungary qualified with the best result. Koji Murofushi of Japan is the world champion and another one of the favorites for gold, along with Beijing gold medalist Primoz Kozmus of Slovenia. Final at 20:20.

Women’s 400 meters – Antonina Krivoshapka of Russia finished with fastest semi final time. DeeDee Trotter of the United States, Novelene Williams-Mills of Jamaica and Sanya Richards-Ross of the United States are all in medal contention. Final at 21:10.

Women’s marathon – Begins at 11:00.

Women’s triple jump – Finals begin at 19:35. Olha Saladuha of Ukraine has the best result this year in the world, while Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan, silver medalist at the world’s had the best result in qualifying. Yargelis Savigne of Cuba is also in the running.

Badminton

Men’s singles final between Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and Lin Dan of China, Men’s doubles final between China and Denmark.

Cycling – Men’s Omnium – The 4 kilometers individual pursuit is at 10:00; The 15 kilometers scratch race is at 17:00; The 1 kilometer time trial is at 18:10.

Diving, Women’s 3 meters springboard at 19:00, with China’s Wu Minxia as the only option for gold.

Fencing, Men’s Team Foil – Competition begins at 09:00, with Italy as the clear favorites to win.

Gymnastics

Men’s Floor at 14:00, with about six athletes in the running for the medals. Men’s Pommel Horse begins at the same time, with Louis Smith of Great Britain as the favorite. The Women’s vault is Mckayla Maroney of the USA to win.

Sailing

Men’s Finn – Medal race begins at 14:00, with Ben Ainslie of Great Britian being the only man with a shot of overcoming Denmark’s Jonas Hogh-Christensen for gold.

Star Class – Medal race begins at 14:00, with Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson of Great Britain almost at 100% to come away with the gold.

Shooting, Men’s 50 meters pistol.

Tennis

Women’s doubles – The Williams sisters facing the Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Mixed doubles – The Belarussian duo of Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi facing the home favorties Laura Robson and Andy Murray.

Men’s Finals – Happens before the mixed doubles finals, as Roger Federer, gunning for the only tennis title he’s missing taking on Andy Murray.

Weightlifting, Women’s +75 kilograms – Final lifting off at 12:30.

Wrestling

First events of the Olympics, with the finals in the 55 kilograms and the 74 kilograms of the Greco-Roman style taking place.
