An American night on the track, with three gold medals. Allyson Felix finally won her individual gold medal in the 200 meters race; Aries Merritt took his first gold medal with a fantastic sub 13-seconds time in the 110 meters hurdles and Brittney Reese, lazily, took the gold in the women’s long jump with 7.12, her only good jump of the final.
Athletics
Women’s long jump – Two time world champion, Brittney Reese of the United States had only one jump in the final that counted, but it was enough with 7.12. Elena Sokolova of Russia took silver and Janay DeLoach, also of the United States, took bronze.
Women’s 400 meters hurdles – Natalya Antyukh of Russia won by 0.07 seconds, taking her first gold medal after a silver and a bronze in Athens, beating Lashinda Demus of the United States (silver) and Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic with bronze.
Women’s 200 meters – Allyson Felix, finally, winning her first individual gold medal, beating a high quality field, leaving 100 champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica with silver and Carmelita Jeter of the United States with bronze.
Men’s 110 meters hurdles – Aries Merritt of the United States took gold, being the only man in the race to go below 13 seconds (12.92), followed by Jason Richardson of the United States and Hansle Parchment of Jamaica with bronze, while the Olympic champion and world record holder, Dayron Robles, couldn’t finish the race.
Canoeing
Men’s K-1 1000 meters – Eirik Veras Larsen of Norway took his second gold medal in this event, finishing ahead of Adam van Koeverden of Canada taking silver and Max Hoff of Germany with bronze.
Men’s C-1 1000 meters – Sebastian Brendel of Germany took the gold medal. Silver went to David Cal of Spain, bronze to Mark Oldershaw of Canada.
Men’s K-2 1000 meters – Gold to Hungary, silver to Portugal and bronze to Germany.
Women’s K-4 500 meters – Another team gold to Hungary, followed by the German four with silver and bronze to Belarus.
Equestrian
Individual jumping – Steve Guerdat of Switzerland took the gold medal. Silver went to Gerco Schroder of the Netherlands. Bronze to Cian O’Connor of Ireland.
Sailing
49er class – Australia took gold, New Zealand with silver and the Danish duo took bronze.
Table Tennis
Men’s team – China, who else, took the gold medal, beating South Korea 3-0 in the final. Germany took the bronze, beating Hong Kong in the bronze medal match.
Taekwondo
Women’s 49 kilograms – Wu Jingyu of China took the gold medal for the second consecutive time, beating Brigitte Yague of China in the final. Bronze went to Chanatip Sonkham of Thailand and Lucija Zaninovic of Croatia.
Men’s 58 kilograms – Joel Gonzalez of Spain took gold, beating Lee Dae-Hoon of South Korea in the final. Bronze went to Alexey Denisenko of Russia and Oscar Munoz Oviedo of Colombia.
Beach Volleyball
Women’s – The all-american final went to Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, winning their third consecutive Olympic games. The Brazilian duo took the bronze.
Wrestling
Women’s freestyle 48 kilograms – Hitomi Obara of Japan took the gold medal, her first Olympic medal after winning 8 world titles at 51 and 48 kilograms. Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan, the bronze medalist in Beijing, moved one up to take silver. Bronze went to Clarissa Chun of the United States and Carol Huynh, the Beijing gold medalist, from Canada.
Women’s freestyle 63 kilograms – Kaori Icho took another gold for Japan, her third consecutive at this event. Jin Ruixue of China took the silver medal. Bronze went to Lubov Volosova of Russia and Soronzonboldyn Battsetseg of Mongolia.
