Seeing as Robin van Persie still hasn’t a signed a new contract, Manchester United are still in the one-horse race to try and get the Dutchman from Arsenal, who may be the team Van Persie is with right now, but that doesn’t mean he’s not thinking of other places and teams.
More than a week since it was announced that Robin van Persie is back with Arsenal and ready to commit his future to the club, seemingly pleased with the signings and the summer dealings, we still don’t have an announcement that he has indeed decided to pledge his future to the club he’s been playing for since 2004.
Manchester United look like the only team currently left in the race. Juventus are going through every available striker in Europe and despite all the rumors, never made an offer higher than £15 million. Roberto Mancini, believe him or not, has already said that City have dropped out of the race for the player. Wenger wasn’t really keen on giving yet another star player to City anyways. Not that United are such a better option anyway.
Wenger keeps claiming that the additions of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski over the summer aren’t a case of replacing Van Persie but an addition to him. Still, it seems that the club, maybe against Wenger’s will, knowing how money loving and profit adoring this team is, are open for business regarding the Premier League’s top scorer last season (30 goals) and the PFA player of the year.
For how much? Seeing as Van Persie still doesn’t have a new contract ready and the current one runs out in 11 months, some suggest that a £22 million offer from United, already have been made, will convince the gunners to sell the man they’ve been trying to avoid releasing all summer. Alex Ferguson seems anxious to get a big deal done before the beginning of the Premier League this weekend, hoping that the Van Persie saga finally ends.
But United have other leads, un-related to Arsenal and big name strikers, as well. Angelo Henriquez, the Chilean wonderkid (18) who plays for Universidad de Chile was supposed to be wrapped up two months ago. Instead, the clubs never reached an agreement, and suddenly Ferguson’s biggest fear, Manchester City, have stepped in, trying to make a move for the youngster themselves. Henriquez has scored 11 goals in 17 matches this year for Los Azules, and it seems his affair will be decided very shortly, with Manchester, blue or red, being his destination in any case.
United are also looking for a left back, with the latest name on the list being Neil Taylor from Swansea, the Welsh international who also played for Great Britain in all their matches during the 2012 Olympics.
