Michel Bastos With the Early Goal of the Year in France

Two weeks of football are hardly enough time to declare a goal of the season, but I doubt we’ll see many strikes better than Michel Bastos delivering a perfect overhead kick in Lyon’s 4-1 win over Troyes, putting on top of the table after two matches in Ligue 1 with 6 points.

If there’s one team that might give PSG a fight this season for the Ligue 1 title, it should be Lyon. They’ve made very little changes to the squad that finished 4th last season, but don’t expect Montpellier or Lille to be as good as they were last season and two years ago. Lyon are the favorites to finish second in the league, with no one giving anyone but PSG a chance to win the title. After spending over €100 million in one summer, who else is there to pick?

But Lyon’s season began very well, even in the Super Cup, playing better than Montpellier in the 2-2 draw, leading to penalty kicks, won by the cup holders. The first weekend resulted in a tough 1-0 win, away versus Rennes. Yesterday it went much more smoothly against Troyes, newly promoted and relegation bound once again, scoring four goals in the second half after falling behind in the 47th minute.

Bafetimbi Gomis scored the equalizer and the closing goal, but it was Bastos’ fantastic bicycle kick off a rebound that gave Lyon the lead, scoring his first goal of the season and his 16th since transferring to Lyon from Lille in 2009.
