Transfer Rumors 2012 – The Manchester City Shopping List

So far, it’s only been Jack Rodwell. With less than a week left on the transfer window, Manchester City are planning a £50-60 million spending spree, targeting mostly central midfielders – Daniele De Rossi of Roma, Javi Martinez of Athletic Bilbao and Javi Garcia of Benfica, while the Scott Sinclair from Swansea deal is nearly completed.

Roberto Mancini has been loud and noisy all summer about wanting to add quality to his squad. He didn’t say anything, but everyone pretty much knows and agrees that signing only Jack Rodwell from Everton wasn’t his plan of reinforcements. Mancini offered several times for Daniel Agger of Liverpool, but City have given up on the player.

Scott Sinclair of Swansea is someone who might be joining Mancini’s squad very soon after a few weeks of negotiations with the Welsh club. Sinclair scored 8 goals last season for Swansea and added another one on the opening match day just over a week ago. His arrival is probably to fill the void left by the departure of Adam Johnson, which might mean Sinclair isn’t planned to make too many appearances, at least initially. Foreign managers like foreign names, big names.

Daniele De Rossi did all but sign another contract with his own blood, but he has declared time and time again that he’s staying with Roma, who have made him the highest paid Italian player in the Serie A. Manchester City have been waiving a check with £30 million on it since the Euro, but so far no one is biting. Maybe a little bit of added pressure can change the thought process with the Italians.

If De Rossi doesn’t pan out, City are planning on Javi Garcia, the Spaniard who plays for Benfica after beginning his career with Real Madrid. Garcia has a release clause of £23 million, but it’s highly likely that Benfica, who signed him in 2009 for €7 million will let him go for less than the contract clause.

Regardless of who comes, Javi Martinez of Athletic Bilbao, who has yet to play in the league this season because of his unsettled situation, with Bayern Munich trying to work out a deal with the Basque club for over a month, is also someone City might swoop for, seeing as Bayern aren’t exactly advancing in the right direction, venting frustration from the negotiations through the press.

City have a strong squad, but even the richest and most impressive of champions need a little bit of new blood each summer. Jack Rodwell isn’t enough, and the problems in the win over Southampton and the draw against Liverpool are making it a bit clearer that without proper additions, the title might go somewhere else this season.
